Quick reminder on #PrimeDay: Since 2021, @amazon has donated $425,900 to elect governors who will ban abortion

popular.info/p/these-corpor… Image
@amazon The money donated by @amazon is being put to use by the @GOPGovs to install governors who eliminate abortion rights for millions of women

@GOPGovs has already reserved millions in ad time for key races in Arizona, Michigan and other states #PrimeDay

popular.info/p/these-corpor…
#PrimeDay is also a reflection of how the relationship between media and corporations undermines trust in news.

Prime Day is not a holiday or a news event.

Major media organizations treat Prime Day like news because @amazon provides financial incentives to do so.
.@amazon has a market cap of $1.1 trillion

IMO, it should pay for its advertising, and media companies shouldn't do free advertising in exchange for kickbacks

1. THERE WAS NEVER ANY REASON TO DOUBT THE STORY THAT A TEN-YEAR-OLD GIRL WAS FORCED TO TRAVEL TO INDIANA FOR AN ABORTION.

The sourcing was strong.

The reporter is reliable.

The entire thing was a right-wing fever dream.

Follow along if interested.

2. On 7/1, the @indystar reported a 10-year-old rape victim was forced to travel to Indiana to receive an abortion because she was more than 6 weeks pregnant.

The lead reporter was @srudavsky who has been the health reporter for the @indystar for 18 YRS Image
3. Rudavsky sourcing was solid.

Papers run stories based on ANONYMOUS sources all the time, which are inherently less reliable.

But Rudavsky had an on-the-record quote from Dr. Caitlin Bernard, the obstetrician-gynecologist who performed the abortion.

1. Abortion is still legal in Kansas because the state Supreme Court found that the Kansas Constitution protects a woman's access to abortion

But that might soon change

And the Catholic Church is spending big to make sure it does change

🧵

2. A group called "Value Them Both" is promoting a ballot initiative to amend the Kansas Constitution to state that there is no constitutional right to abortion

Where does this group get their money?

The largest source, BY FAR, is the Catholic Church
3. Of the $1.2 million raised in 2021 by the coalition pushing the anti-abortion amendment, at least $750,000 came from the Catholic Church

500K from the Archdiocese of Kansas City and 250K from the Catholic Diocese of Wichita

(2022 donations haven't been disclosed.) Image

1. Access to abortion for millions hinges on the results of November's elections

Numerous companies CLAIM to support abortion rights for their employees but recently wrote 6-FIGURE CHECKS to elect governors that want to ban abortion

🧵

popular.info/p/these-corpor…
2. In Arizona, for example, abortion is currently available through 15 weeks of pregnancy.

The leading Republican candidate for governor, @KariLake, pledged to close all abortion clinics

The leading Democratic candidate, @katiehobbs pledged to protect abortion rights
3. Arizona is a swing state and the election is expected to be close.

But the @GOPGovs (Republican Governors Association) has already bought $10.2 MILLION in ads to defeat Hobbs and elect Lake (or another GOP nominee).

Where does @GOPGovs get all this cash?

UPDATE: On 6/27, popular.info reported @Match Group, which also operates @Tinder, & @OKCupid, donated 137K to @RepublicanAGs, a group dedicated to eliminating abortions rights

Today, @Match says they will no longer donate to the @RepublicanAGs

popular.info/p/the-hypocris…
@Match @Tinder @okcupid @RepublicanAGs 2. @Match Group, based in Dallas, established a fund last year to cover employee travel for abortion

Former CEO Shar Dubey said the Texas law banning most abortions "so regressive to the cause of women’s rights that I felt compelled to speak publicly"

popular.info/p/the-hypocris…
@Match @Tinder @okcupid @RepublicanAGs 3. @RepublicanAGs played a central role in the Dobbs decision and made clear in its fundraising appeals that it would use donations to elect Attorneys General who would aggressively enforce abortion bans

@Match ignored multiple requests for comment

I teamed up with @MorePerfectUS to explain how Match Group — the $20B company behind @Match, @Tinder & @okcupid — quietly used customer revenue to fund a political group devoted to eliminating abortion rights in the U.S.

Match now refuses to comment.

@MorePerfectUS @Match @Tinder @okcupid My report on @match and other companies publicly positioning themselves as supporting their workers while quietly funding @RepublicanAGs, a group dedicated to undermining abortion rights nationwide
