Thought I’d write a thread on ADHD, especially as it’s trending.
I’ll specifically focus on Jacques, from #LoveIsland, who left this evening, and explain how his ADHD affects him, or at least, my POV as someone who has ADHD;
First off, his difficulty expressing emotions;
This is a very common problem for ADHD folk. Myself included. Expressing our emotions can be difficult, as we find it troublesome to regulate our emotions and they can very quickly overwhelm us, and the spotlight of the #LoveIsland villa would probably further intensify this.
Secondly, his impulsive behaviour.
Impulsive behaviour is a very common trait in ADHD, and again this is something I also struggle with.
We tend to react instantly to any information without first processing it. This is often misunderstood as anger, when it is often not.
For example, Jacques reaction to finding out Adam was slagging him off was 100% this in action. No time to process the information you receive, just an instant reaction to it, which came across as anger.
Not all of his behaviour can be put down to ADHD though. I personally think Jacques’ behaviour during Casa Amor was appalling, but apart from that, I think he’s just been showing the classic struggles us ADHD folk often face.
I also really hope Jacques is able to take time to process everything that’s going on, and that the #LoveIsland team offer him all the support he needs.
Quick 🧵 about your rights concerning working from home, if you are entitled to Reasonable Adjustments under the DDA in the UK;
(DDA stands for Disability Discrimination Act)
Basically, your employer cannot force you back to an office if you can do your job at home.
So recently I’ve been contacted by a fair few people who feel they are being pressured by their employer to come back into the office, despite being able to work from home just as effectively.
Under the DDA, working from home can be considered a reasonable adjustment.
The DDA exists to protect you, the employee.
The employer has to support you. They cannot just decide you need to be back in the office because it makes things easier for them.
Basically, if you want to work from home, they need to justify why this can’t continue.
I want to talk today about “mate crime”, a specific form of disability hate crime.
I want to speak about it from the perspective as a victim of it, as I was a victim of it.
However, I only recognised that I was a victim of it very recently.
To set out some context, the events I’m about to described when I was between the ages of 16-18, and was still very much in the position of having no friends, so I was especially vulnerable to it.
To be honest I’ve tried to write this a few times now but I’ve stopped because I’m sort of ashamed but I figure I’ve nothing to be ashamed of.
