Let’s recap:
1)Horrific story of 10 year old rape victim having to travel across state lines for an abortion comes out.

GOP/anti-choice: “THAT STORY IS MADE UP.”

2) Rapist gets arrested, story confirmed.

GOP/anti-choice: “SHE’S 10 SO THAT’S NOT AN ABORTION.”

What’s next?
The damaging rhetoric that abortion is only for irresponsible harlots makes it easy to degrade “those” women, and to believe the binary “abortion = bad.” But now that abortion bans are reality, they want you to believe that anything that challenges that rhetoric isn’t real.
Rather than accept that the success of this dangerous rhetoric has created these horrific realities, they’d rather erase them. Or laugh them off. Or ask you “what’s a woman?” Or ask if you could birth a turtle or taco.

It’s not a game. People are panicked, scared, and suffering.

Tonight at a meetup, someone asked, “What gives you hope?”

Despite it all: gun violence, fall of Roe, attacks on voting right…people coming together to talk about how we can make things better. And how we’re going to build political power to do it.

I love these. We started doing “precinct potlucks” last year - someone hosts in their driveway or yard, we canvass the neighborhood to invite people out to meet with me. We’ve even had people show up as a way to meet me AND their neighbors. Now we’re doing them on the campaign.
The conversation is always different. We keep it casual. Sometimes people are super engaged in politics/government already. Sometimes people get a flyer and just say “why not?”

You are NOT powerless. A ballot initiative to get an amendment to the state Constitution on the Nov ballot which would enshrine abortion access and reproductive rights in Michigan has collected the most signatures of any ballot effort IN STATE HISTORY. Volunteers are STILL GOING.
Absolutely heroic effort by THOUSANDS of volunteers and organizers with @mireprofreedom @ACLUofMichigan @mippadvocates @michigan_voices who are stepping up to do what SCOTUS and our Republican legislature won’t. I’ve seen them absolutely everywhere. 💪

Yesterday I texted with a friend in Illinois who said they started their day yesterday walking to neighborhood field games and ended the day sheltering in place from a mass shooter. "It's too much," she said.

It's just too much.

We weren't made to endure this much trauma.
That's why pleas of "just vote!" feel so trite and disgusting.

I know there's a dystopian disconnect. Like elected officials don't feel that trauma. Don't know the pain, the loss. Don't understand how hard it is to want to participate in a system that doesn't care about you.
But I got into this work knowing this - gun violence, reproductive rights, discrimination - these were all policy choices. Policy choices made for too long by other people for us. Without us.

Politics won't solve everything. But we deserve people making policy who give a damn.

Today’s news that the Supreme Court is taking up the Moore v. Harper case ahead of 2024 should scare the hell out of all of us. This Court could gut our Presidential elections the same way they just gutted Roe. Here’s a 🧵 on why it’s so dangerous and what we can do about it. 1/
The case is from North Carolina, where Republicans want to restore a redistricting map that was drawn by the GOP-led legislature but rejected as a violation of the state constitution by the state’s supreme court. 2/
Taking up Moore v. Harper gives the U.S. Supreme Court the opportunity to apply a doctrine supported by the Court's new extreme conservative majority called “independent state legislature theory,” or ISLT. 3/

The SCOTUS ruling and these barbaric abortion laws couldn't be clearer:
Birth control fails? You don't matter.
Raped and get pregnant? You don't matter.
Ectopic pregnancy? You don't matter.

How do we fight now? In state legislatures. And by sharing our stories. Here's mine:
Roe didn't fall because of the Supreme Court. It fell because of a down-ballot collapse that led to anti-abortion extremists taking over state legislatures, chipping away at access, and passing laws designed to be challenged up to the court. nytimes.com/interactive/20…
Democrats lost 1000(!) state legislature seats between 2007-2017, and the impact couldn’t be more clear.
The Courts won’t save us.
The Congress won’t save us.
States are the frontlines and the last line of defense and where we must focus our energy to take our freedoms back.

We knew Roe would be overturned. But it's no less horrifying. Here in Michigan, a 1931 law that makes providing abortion a felony just became the law of the state. Here’s what we’re doing in Michigan to protect our right to abortion – and what YOU can do to fight back. 1/
For starters, @gretchenwhitmer filed a lawsuit asking the MI Supreme Court to immediately resolve whether the state constitution can and should protect access to abortion and reproductive rights. 2/
In May, a Court of Claims judge ruled to block the enforcement of the 1931 law due to a @PPofMI lawsuit. Because of that ruling, the 1931 law isn’t enforceable. So if you need care, keep your appointment. See your doctor. 3/
