ICYMI, the Indonesian government is planning to ban *the entire internet* in 6 days.
Yes, that's right.
Through Kemkominfo, the govt is forcing "online service providers" to register their apps in their database, or ISPs are required to block them. cnnindonesia.com/teknologi/2022…
And thanks to their vague regulations as to what counts as "online service providers", if you own a simple website that serves a certain amount of users, you have to get it registered.
And yes, video games do count here. Say goodbye to those niche video games like Trackmania!
Doesn't matter you run a big tech superapp, or self projects like @fransallen's PureDNS, heck, even TMViz.
You should be concerned as a user, and as a developer.
@fransallen These new regulations have been delayed for so long, but I guess they just decided "fuck it" and carelessly flip the switch in 6 days.
Even the Human Rights Watch already blasted these planned regulations in the past. hrw.org/news/2021/05/2…
@fransallen Now knowing how our government works, I know the implementation will go half-baked. Nothing short of an extortion tactic without substance.
But I do fear that this time, they're about to take it one step too far.
Everyone will suffer because of this.
Content creators will lose their livelihoods.
DIY programmers with personal projects are going to be fucked over.
Consumers no longer have the freedom of choice.
And if we're a law-abiding citizen that wants to actually register our apps/services properly, the registration process... doesn't even work properly.

The Indonesian old-media giants are trying to push the Constitutional Court a case that would kill content creation + livestreaming in Indonesia as we know it.
<thread, please help me translate!>
In summary, the MNC Media Group, the largest television network in Indonesia is making an official complaint to the Indonesian Constitutional Court regarding the Broadcasting Act (UU Penyiaran). suara.com/tekno/2020/08/…
What does this mean, though? This means that they want to make an update to the regulations so that over-the-top (OTT) video + livestreaming platforms to the Broadcasting Act.
This will have a horrible knock-on effect on the content creators + livestreamers in Indonesia.
