As we all anticipate a GNB press conference today...
...I had a look at how many YouTube views the old COVID briefings were getting.
Remember those?
The last one was Feb 24, when BA.1 was dominant. They made us go through the whole BA.2 wave without any live guidance.
/1 GNB's COVID briefings used to get 25-29k views. NB hasn't ha
Now the BA.5 wave is here, and we have hundreds of thousands of NBers whose most recent vaccine dose was over 6 months ago (which means their antibodies have waned significantly - protection from infection has waned). Still no briefings.
/2
Anyway, there's a bunch of volunteers out here trying desperately to inform the public about all kinds of aspects of SARS-CoV-2 that are really important to know, because they help you make better informed decisions. It is slow going.
/3
We don't have translation resources. We don't have sign language interpreters. We don't have the massive audience a GNB briefing does. What we're doing, even though we're trying like hell, is not as efficient as if *the people in power* cared to communicate.
/4
What *should* they be communicating with their massive platform, that would help protect all of us?

The fact that COVID is airborne.
How much *more* protective respirators are than other masks.
What long COVID is and how common it is.

/5
The relative risks of other dangerous, lifespan-limiting health conditions that have been shown to rise after even 'mild' SARS-CoV-2 infection.

How to reduce household transmission.

#VaccinesPlus. The fact that many NPIs work no matter what variant is surging.
/6
They could tell you all of this. Any time they choose. And since Feb 24, they've chosen to just...not. They've chosen to let you get sick. Get sick again. And spread illness to others you encounter - your loved ones. Your friends and family. Your colleagues. Front-line workers./7
I'm sure there's lots of evidence-based, worthy facts they should be communicating to the public that they're choosing not to, every single day. I need to go make lunch. But what did I forget? /8

Friends are having their most treasured summer plans affected by COVID spreading through their families. If you have really important plans this summer, please be picky about what you do in the 2 weeks leading up to your plans.
/1
I know many of us spend time unmasked with our extended families. But if your family members have a lot of exposures, aren’t masking indoors when they work or shop, they are at increased risk of getting COVID - and passing it on to you.
/2.
Many of us have special people in our lives that we have gotten used to seeing unmasked indoors. But if those people aren’t being cautious too, haven’t kept masking, visiting with them unmasked could ruin your summer plans. /3

Now that we’re all exhausted and despairing - great time for me to post my reusable respirators 🥰

Top is NanoMask by @Prescientx1 - lasts for 6 months of occasional use (my lifestyle) or 1 month of daily full-shift use

Prescientx is 🇨🇦 - NanoMask currently out of stock
/1 Image
I’ve been wearing the NanoMask for almost every outing since I got it in the fall. It’s my favourite. When it’s back in stock I’ll let folks know. If I won the lottery I’d buy every adult in NB a NanoMask.

/2
The middle mask is the [breathe] by @Prescientx1 also. This mask will last for years. It’s the black filter you see on the front that you change. Not exactly sure on when to change it - I just got it. Filters are affordable.

These 2 masks are pretty affordable. Comfy too. ImageImage

Holy crap. Health network boards revoked. Trustees invoked.

He said it's okay to screenshot his tweets so I'm going to share this one which I think this tremendously important. I know it's hard to accept that our governments have been acting against evidence and against our best interests. It can take time for this to sink in. /1
For me this has been a very long journey. For the first 15 months of the pandemic I really was just a cheerleader for whatever GNB said in their press conferences - sometimes with some minor caveats when I relayed info to friends.
/2
But it's been more obvious since summer/fall 2021 that our provincial governments ran out of will to protect people. They were unwilling to keep protections in place any longer to protect kids under 12, who couldn't get vaccinated.

Today marks 3 months since I have been meeting my kids outdoors for lunch every school day.
It takes 2 hours of my day, every time.
It has affected my work schedule and other aspects of my life.
I wouldn't have expected to have to do this for 3 months. I'm glad I do.

Back when NB announced that school masks would be dropped, at first I waited for someone else to step in and say it was a bad idea. Surely, it wouldn't actually happened.
Days passed. We realized nobody else was going to speak up.
/2
Our group was the first organization of people in Atlantic Canada to speak up for the protection of universal masks in schools. We did it before the IWK pediatricians, before NB's pediatricians, before NBMS. We had great citations though.

There's risks associated with certain leisure pursuits, and then there's risks being borne by people with little to no agency.
We know that COVID spreads through the air.

Why are the people responsible for daycare, school, and LTC facilities in 🇨🇦 not being directly told this?
It's just unconscionable to me that not only is it proven that COVID spreads through the air, but we also have a number of things that can be done today to reduce transmissions!

Why aren't the people running these facilities being directly informed to filter the air?

/2
Why aren't the people running these facilities being directly informed of the efficacy of N95s? The efficacy of ventilation, and how to measure it?

Why does almost nobody running a facility full of innocent people with little agency seem interested in protecting these people?/3
