I’m not even gonna list everything this person (or, probably, group of good old balding comrades sitting around in a government building somewhere in Moscow) is hilariously wrong about, but I do want to make this point very clear: Maidan was not a coup.
It initially was a slightly naive, incredibly peaceful student uprising against a government filled with amazingly corrupt (if you think Ukraine has problems NOW, read up on Yanukovych’s inner circle) thugs who had no problem whatsoever kidnapping and murdering journalists or
who ever disagreed with them and had enough influence to threaten them. A lot of people use the phrase “the protests turned violent”, and they’re kind of right. The protests did turn violent — but only after the government sent special ops guys to beat up the students who were
peacefully protesting with posters and stuff. But even then, after more and more outraged people joined the protest, Maidan remained pretty much peaceful. Until the government tried to outlaw all kinds of protests and, when that didn’t work, sent actual snipers to slaughter
the protesters in broad daylight. And over a hundred people died valiantly fighting for a better future for Ukraine. Despite what Kremlin-funded sources might tell you, this wasn’t some kind of alt-right uprising — there were people of all political backgrounds among the people
who spent their days and nights on Kyiv’s independence square, building barricades, painting posters, giving lectures and so on. Yes, there were nationalists. But there also were all kinds of leftists there, as well as people who had generally been pretty much apolitical
until our government decided that beating up unarmed kids in the middle of the night was a good idea. All of my friends — mostly sociology students from Ukraine’s oldest university — took part in the protests, as well as my parents, their friends, and pretty much everyone I knew.
And you know what else often gets overlooked? Maidan didn’t result in someone “coming to power”. It resulted with our ex-president fleeing to Russia (where else?), our government resigning, and new elections being held. Transparent ones with international electoral observers.
Petro Poroshenko won those, but if you wanna imagine him as some kind of bloodthirsty tyrant who hung on to power, think again — he ran for second term in 2019 and lost to Volodymyr Zelenskyy. So who exactly is running this “Kyiv regime” Russian trolls get so overexcited about?
Is it the democratically elected president who served one term, lost the following election and calmly went on with his life? Or is it the other democratically elected president who won more than 70% of the votes, and just happens to be an openly Jewish Russian-speaking comedian
who based his entire electoral platform of the idea that Ukraine should try and stop the war in the East (reminder: Russia actually invaded back in 2014) and seemed to genuinely believe that it would be possible to solve all of this through diplomacy?
As a bonus: some photos I took during the earlier-ish days of Maidan. Yeah, this is definitely what a secret CIA-organised coup looks like. ImageImageImageImage

This week’s most amazing testament to the power of social media (and stupidity) is when a Russian expat currently living in Estonia openly bragged on Twitter about committing tax fraud because she “didn’t want her money to go to those pesky Ukrainian refugees”.
Her tweet was forwarded to Estonia’s incredibly based ex-president @IlvesToomas, who obviously took note of such blatant disregard for Estonian law. Instead of, idk, getting a lawyer or something, the woman in question decided that the account was “some troll pretending to be
the Estonian president” and made fun of his response. In the end, she got fired (and tweeted about it, obviously), and is now probably facing deportation. So… yeah. Pay your taxes and don’t brag about stupid things on the internet, I guess. Also, don’t underestimate Estonians.

Thread of threads (mostly about the war, Ukrainian wartime culture, language issues and claims that the USSR was some kind of utopia filled with human rights and rainbows):
Thread about the much-discussed and woefully misunderstood “Russian-speaking minority” in Ukraine.
Thread on LGBTQ rights in the Soviet Union.

Here’s an example to illustrate what I’m talking about: about two months ago I wrote a thread about the discrimination LGBTQ people faced in the USSR… and got hordes of angry tankies in the replies and my own DMs. According to them, I was obviously against queer people and
against human rights in general. A while before that I made a TikTok about how economic sanctions weren’t an attack against regular Russians but one of the few realistic ways to slow down the Russian war machine. I got incredibly angry comments from people saying that I “wasn’t a
real leftist” because I didn’t care about the Russian working class and only cared about “white Ukrainians”. Is a lot of this stupid crap a psyop planned by Russian intelligence? Could be. However, I haven’t really seen than many high-profile leftist politicians or intellectuals

To clarify: I understand that most right-wing politicians, activists, talk show hosts and thinkers in the US and Europe are even less supportive of Ukraine than their leftist counterparts. I just never expected them to understand what we’re going though, so I’m not disappointed.
When I’m talking about the abstract western left, I mean the deafeningly loud American tankies who seem to be everywhere on social media, the European “leftist” pacifists who just want for this war to be over and for life to go back to normal, all of the anti-NATO-expansion folks
I know they’re probably more present on the Internet than in real life, but a lot of the more radical “anti-imperialist” organisations from all over the western world are completely ignoring the plight of Ukraine’s people, and it’s sickening. Also, I realise that it might look

Back when I was a sociology student at Kyiv-Mohyla, I was stupidly, shamelessly enamoured with the collective western Left. I dreamed of a day when Ukrainian academia would have widespread and popular discussions about colonialism, privilege, and all of the -isms. I read essays
by prominent English-speaking activists and thought “oh, if only these brilliant people were to learn about Ukraine and its complicated past, about the discrimination we have faced throughout the centuries, about the genocides and revolutions. They would understand us. They would
probably share valuable experience or help us somehow lay down the theoretical groundwork that would explain all of the traumatic events we’ve witnessed and lived though.” I was… dazzlingly naive. And now, when my country is under attack from a literal kleptofascist empire that

‘Aight, here’s the totally inauthentic beef-rib-and-chicken-broth ramen inspired in equal parts by watching Roy Choi’s amazing Masterclass course, and the sad realisation that I cannot, alas, continue eating a pack of spicy instant Buldak ramen noodles a day. Seriously, I can’t. Image
Yes, the ramen eggs were awfully overcooked, but, for a ramen made from ingredients sourced exclusively from the nearest Мегамаркет supermarket (actually, they have a strangely good selection of Asian food AND they have chicken feet/beef bones/pork bones and all of the other
stock-making things you might need), it’s actually amazingly delicious. Also can I do hope this doesn’t count as cultural appropriation and none of my Japanese followers see this as potentially annoying/offending. Oh yeah, and pointers/criticism is always welcome!
