Take a moment to think about the staggering counterintelligence issues in the crazy Dec 18, 2020 WH meeting. A thread.

In the Oval Office, people advocated Trump illegitimately hold on to power, including using the military to seize voting machines.

That group included: (/1)
Mike Flynn, who who was paid by an organ of Russian state media to travel to Moscow to attend a dinner where he was seated next to Putin.

Flynn later plead guilty to lying to the FBI about conversations he had with the Russian Ambassador about election interference. (/2)
Patrick Byrne, one of several men once in an intimate relationship with convicted Russian agent Marina Butina.

Byrne gave money to Butina after her return to Russia, where she ran for the Duma, hounded Navalny, and supported the invasion of Ukraine. (/3)

businessinsider.com/pro-trump-form…
Rudy Giuliani, who repeatedly met with and took info from sanctioned Russian agents like Andrii Derkach, despite USIC warnings to the White House in 2019 that Trump’s personal lawyer “was the target of an influence operation by Russian intelligence” (/4)

washingtonpost.com/national-secur…
So in this tiny meeting in the Oval Office where options to upend US democracy were advanced to the President of the United States, there were not one, not two, but three people directly linked to sanctioned and convicted agents of the Russian government. (/5)
While I doubt Russia planned it, their efforts to gain access to Trump’s inner sanctum succeeded beyond their wildest dreams.

And it demonstrates just how successful seemingly amateurish intelligence activity can be. (6/end) Image

ICYMI-the arrest of Michael Lee Tomasi for making online threats against FBI agents.

You might have missed it because neither DOJ's press release-nor the statements of senior DOJ/FBI personnel-detail the website & specific threats.

So let's do that.

1/
justice.gov/opa/pr/arizona…
Tomasi's indictment notes the threats appeared on patriots[.]win. Neither DOJ's press release, nor the statements of senior DOJ/FBI personnel, mention the nature of patriots[.]win, let alone its progenitor website, thedonald[.]win, and its role in the run-up to Jan 6.

2/ Image
Neither DOJ's press release, nor the statements of senior DOJ/FBI personnel, include any specific threats from the indictment. It doesn't even include a link to the indictment!

And no reporting I've seen bothered to read it.

Turns out Tomasi isn't an especially nice person.

I read through the complaint, and it's bad - very bad. 🧵

It's a 3 count complaint:
- 18 USC 371 (conspiracy to act as foreign agent/defraud the US)
- 18 USC 951 (acting as illegal agent of foreign govt
- 18 USC 1542 (use of passport obtained via false statement)

1/
Image
Cuba has several intelligence and counterintelligence entities; the complaint identifies the Directorate of Intelligence/Dirección General de Inteligencia (commonly known as the DGI) as the entity Rocha allegedly worked for.

2/ Image
Rocha worked for Dept of State from 1981-2002 - the entire time also allegedly working for the DGI.

He was the NSC Director of Inter-American Affairs (the FBI even traveled down to Santo Domingo to update his clearance), later at the US Interests Section in Havana.

Looking at some of the detail in the indictment, one thing which stood out was the effort Nauta appears to have taken to hide his presence - beyond the text 🤫 emojis - at Mar-a-Lago over the weekend of at least June 25-27, 2022.

Including de Oliveira's bush-jumping Monday.

1/ Image
On Mon, June 27th, Nauta went to Mar-a-Lago but doesn't appear to have entered the property, meeting De Oliveira instead on an adjacent property on the north end of Mar-a-Lago.

Note the very specific times - quite possibly derived from CCTV coverage in the govt's possession.

2/ Image
Why didn't Nauta go in? Presumably not be seen. Also possibly to avoid badging in, though there's little detail about badging/access procedures at MAL.

This is the north edge of the MAL property line. The south side of Woodbridge Rd matches the description in the indictment.

Another campaign event, another photo of Trump surrounded by LE next to his airplane.

I get the authoritarian goals of this for his campaign.

But disappointed so many LE officers choose to do so with a man – facing multiple criminal indictments – that a judge declared a rapist.

Particularly when Trump places them all over his social media feed next to things like this.

Are you going to “do things to [us] that have never been done before”?
It’s a tough issue I think Trump deliberately takes advantage of.

Many good police don’t follow politics closely and just want a photo with a former president by his airplane. Then, peer pressure kicks in with others.

But it’s time LE understands they’re being used as a prop.

Newly unredacted Mar-a-Lago search warrant affidavit information: before the search, the FBI and DOJ knew more than half (between 34 and 39 of approximately 64) of the boxes that were removed from the storage area had not been returned.
More newly unredacted info: the FBI and DOJ also knew, prior to the search warrant, that “classified information was possessed in other areas of” Mar-a-Lago. How? Witness testimony?
Secret Service enters the scene:

“FPOTUS COUNSEL 1 is escorted through the ANTEROOM entrance by an unidentified individual wearing a jacket with ‘USSS POLICE’ printed on the back. The unidentified individual and FPOTUS COUNSEL 1 exit the ANTEROOM entrance moments later.”

Interesting find re Susie Wiles.

Something not mentioned in news reporting: I really hope the FBI has sent all of the original classified docs from Mar-a-Lago to the lab for fingerprint analysis.

All clearance holders are fingerprinted, meaning a couple of things:
1/
Investigators should be able to get an idea of:
1) who with a clearance handled the docs and
2) ID fingerprints not matching any clearance holder

IDing who is associated with the latter can be hard because most people have never been fingerprinted.

2/
le.fbi.gov/science-and-la…
Beyond identification, prints can be investigatively helpful in a number of ways:
- showing the same print(s) across a variety of documents
- the volume of prints, eg, was there one Trump print on a particular doc, or hundreds? The latter would imply heavy handling
