Reading up on how Democrats who opposed abortion rights almost brought down the ACA might be instructive. Start with Bart Stupak. This was an issue where the *composition* of House Democrats mattered a lot.
Rahm Emanuel and Pelosi built a House majority by recruiting NRA A-rated, conservative Democrats. It was a big majority but it was filled with people who didn’t want to touch cultural issues like guns, immigration, abortion. And they played a role in killing cap & trade too.
There used to be a lot more abortion-rights-opposing Democrats and vice-versa with Republicans. Now there is one House Dem, and zero Senate Dems still opposing Roe codification. Only 2 Senate Rs publicly supporting Roe.
This is the roll call vote where Republicans blocked an evenly divided, bipartisan national commission to investigate January 6th, with joint subpoena powers demanded by Republicans and negotiated by Republican John Katko. senate.gov/legislative/LI…
That vote is an example of how Senate “no” votes are effectively irrelevant. 54-35 loses to end a filibuster, and most bills of consequence are filibustered these days. 59-1 loses too.

NEW: Trump's 2024 Prospects Dented by Jan. 6 Committee Revelations, GOP Sen. Toomey Says bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
Toomey called Trump's actions after the 2020 election heading into 1/6 "disqualifying" and said even getting the GOP nomination is now "much more tenuous."
He expects the party will name "a stronger candidate."
Toomey isn't running for reelection, and he's one of 7 GOP senators to vote to convict Trump in his 2nd impeachment trial.
Reminder: Mitch McConnell warned last year the GOP could enact a "right to life of the unborn" if Democrats nix the 60-vote filibuster rule. bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
McConnell vowed not to gut the legislative filibuster for abortion or any other issue when asked by a reporter earlier this year.
Reasons for McConnell to keep his word: Democrats generally want the federal government to do *a lot more* than Republicans. The filibuster lets Rs control much of what becomes law whether they have a majority or not.
I remember talking to Rob Portman last year when he was touting the bipartisan Senate investigation of Jan. 6 and he said they *didn't talk to key officials from the White House* including Mark Meadows.
