Today marks the anniversary of #10YearsRojava. Ten years of hard-fought achievements; ten years of setbacks, too. On this occasion, RIC is releasing 2 long-form articles. The first, appearing today, recalls the history of the revolution.
Ten years ago, the people of Kobane took to the streets demanding autonomy, thus sparking a revolution. Our first piece seeks to trace the developments between the early uprising in Kobane & today's AANES system.
How did it come to be? How did it develop?
A lot has changed even since RIC released its 'Beyond the Frontlines' report detailing NES' political structures in 2019. The current piece will update the form & the functions of the communes, councils, women's houses, and more.
Part II of this report, which will be published soon, will provide a more in-depth view of both the revolution's accomplishments & shortcomings, based on the concrete examples of healthcare, the legal system, & the political economy.
The Turkey-Iran-Russia meeting: what we know so far.
The leaders of the 3 countries met in Tehran on July 19 to discuss the Syrian conflict, amid Erdoğan's calls for a new invasion of NES. No 'green light' for such an operation was given publically, but war may yet happen.
During the meeting, Erdoğan once again raised the issue of Turkish national security, saying "The terrorist organizations [referring to the YPG/YPJ] must be confronted and ousted from Syria." He also expressed his hope "to receive Iranian and Russian support in this regard."
In a meeting with Iran's Khamenei, the latter told Erdoğan that "any military offensive into Syria's north will definitely harm Turkey, Syria & the region, & will benefit the terrorists," yet agreed that "We will certainly cooperate with [Turkey] in the fight against terrorism."
Events across NES celebrated the 10th anniversary of the 'Rojava Revolution' yesterday. Thousands of people from across the Jazira region participated in celebrations held at Qamishlo's 'Martyrs of the 12 of March' Stadium.
At an international conference hosted by the Rojava Center for Strategic Studies, several prominent voices gave speeches on the occasion, including Amina Kakabaveh, a Swedish MP of Kurdish descent, Simon Dubbins of @unitetheunion, & @IrfSecretariat president @nadinemaenza.
Additionally, the French delegation headed by Bernard Kouchner appeared in person to congratulate NES on 10 years of revolution, saying "We are here & you can count on our support on anything. You are not alone. You are an example for the entire world. We will never forget you."
