AAJA is devastated to learn about the mass shooting following a Lunar New Year celebration in Monterey Park, CA, that left 10 individuals dead and at least 10 injured.
We send our deepest condolences to the families affected in Monterey Park and the greater LA AAPI community. /1
Monterey Park’s Asian American community makes up more than 65% of the city’s population and this shooting occurred as Asian Americans nationwide gathered with loved ones to celebrate Lunar New Year. /2

As coverage of the Tokyo Olympics continues, AAJA's Pacific Islander Task Force urges media organizations to be mindful in their reporting not to perpetuate stereotypes about Indigenous Pacific Islanders in headlines and coverage. (2/11)
DON'T use harmful language that conjures & perpetuates stereotypes and the exoticization of Pacific Islanders (i.e., “the naked Tongan”). Exotification contributes to the “othering” of Pacific Islanders, who are Indigenous peoples with a long history within the American diaspora.
