In The Public Square with @jnery_newsstand: How to move forward twitter.com/i/broadcasts/1…
@jnery_newsstand For those who still find it hard to accept a second Marcos presidency – how does one “move on”?

What does coming to terms with that sweeping mandate look like? #InThePublicSquare
@jnery_newsstand In this episode of #InThePublicSquare, veteran journalist John Nery talks to political scientist Dr. Carmel Abao of the Ateneo de Manila University as she considers the ways to move forward.

WATCH:
@jnery_newsstand Abao on the movement behind the Robredo-Pangilinan campaign: I think ang nangyari kasi ay na-surprise tayo.... We have to take stock on what that movement was. That's the starting point. #InThePublicSquare
@jnery_newsstand Abao on why Robredo lost: I think the profound question is why did Marcos win when there's a Leni? I think he won is because of his masterful use of traditional means. #InThePublicSquare
@jnery_newsstand Abao called the Robredo-Pangilinan campaign 'aspiring': People wanted change, and they saw that in Leni. #InThePublicSquare
@jnery_newsstand Abao on election cheating allegations: I think tama na hindi inignite ng Leni camp ang electoral protests kasi walang enough resources. #InThePublicSquare
@jnery_newsstand Abao compares Robredo's and Marcos' campaign strategies: 'Yung house-to-house, there are millions of households in PH, how would you do that? Meanwhile si Marcos, anlaki ng TikTok presence. #InThePublicSquare
@jnery_newsstand "We have to come to terms with the approaches we use," Abao says, highlighting the importance of building deep relationships and avoiding othering sectors. #InThePublicSquare
@jnery_newsstand Abao on Angat Buhay NGO: I think there's a need to sustain the pink movement. It was a channel for participation.... When Leni declared Angat Buhay non-political, parang where's the channel for [political] participation? #InThePublicSquare
@jnery_newsstand Abao: But at the same time, people are also [looking to Leni to build a political movement], which is unfair. It takes courage to say no, which is what she did. We have to respect that. #InThePublicSquare
@jnery_newsstand Abao: I think the best movement is organic, and that happens when people do things together.... One way to go about it is conversations muna. #InThePublicSquare
@jnery_newsstand Abao: To build a movement, kailangan may consensus building. Ano bang gusto mo? Ano bang ayaw mo? #InThePublicSquare
@jnery_newsstand Abao shares advice to young people looking for channels for political participation: If you want to change something, choose your movement.... Find or form organizations. Change is always through organization. #InThePublicSquare
@jnery_newsstand Abao to those thinking of working for the government: Don't look for a perfect government. That's not going to happen. Ask yourself what are your bottom lines, your deal-breakers. #InThePublicSquare
@jnery_newsstand Abao cites importance of having an opposition in government: The Marcos regime is a coalition of the elites. As long as these elites bargain for their comfort, it will thrive. So kung walang opposition sa loob, kailangan may opposition sa labas.

THREAD on security for Marcos' 1st SONA. 21,000 troops to be deployed, biggest contingent since Aquino and Duterte. Most Aquino had was 10,000, and most Duterte had was 15,000. Another rare move, last seen during Arroyo, was declaring Commonwealth a no-rally zone. | via @lianbuan
@lianbuan PNP says it's not overkill, but just being prepared. Protest leader @natoreyes says this makes them look "very insecure." Political Science prof Francisco Magno tells @jairojourno: “A popular president is not supposed to worry too much about protest since people are on his side."
@lianbuan With Commonwealth no-go, protesters apply – but were denied – permit for Batasan road because 1.) protests would obstruct traffic and 2.) Batasan road is not a freedom park. | via @lianbuan
