#EthCC talk: Sybil Resistance for a more democratic web3 by @owocki
TLDR: Boosting decentralized coordination and trust via identities utilizing soulbound and DID systems.
To begin with, Kevin went through a list of answers to his "what is the purpose of Web 3" question. This was my favorite:
@carl_cervone: "to regenerate the world by taking the most powerful coordination tool invented - money - and reprogramming it with different values."
Decentralized Society 101:
- A soul (account)
- A credential that encodes into a soul's state
- An entity that creates a cluster of souls
Idea is to take our on-chain identities and marking up that data with Soulbound tokens or DIDs that can have someone attest to that account via an authorizing trusted entity — eg every time you contribute to a Gitcoin grant round, Gitcoin can issue a SBT that tags your address.
More Examples of DeSoc use-cases that can build up one’s reputation.
With enough identifiers, you can start creating an interconnected web of trust.
This enables intersectional identity. Which allows for:
* DeFi protocols to assess trust (use your reputation as collateral) cc @RMRK
* Sybil resistance
* Pluralistic identity that creates cooperation across social distance
(cont'd)
* NFT artists can ensure they whitelist people who care (imagine an art appreciator score (; cc @justinaversano@quantumNFT may be interested :)
* Good faith actors to get heightened governance powers when voting.
This web of trust allows you to measure social proximity. Here is some math courtesy of @VitalikButerin & @poojaranjan19 on how this could work.
This is really cool, and @0xPARC actually made a ZKfied variant of this for ETHNY and won a prize through Optimism!
TLDR: a regular coder becomes an MEV extraordinaire.
LibEVM associates with the left curve (humble man), he believes that if he can be an MEV Searcher; so can you. Don't let this inflate your ego anon, Lib is just humble and he's worked hard (but with effort, you can be a searcher too).
He starts talking about DAI for a solid 5 minutes..he says in 2020:
- Sometimes DAI would go over $1, making for some juicy arbitrage opportunities.
- 110% Collateralization; Maker made it so you can mint 100 DAI with 110USDC. Soon enough a gov vote changed it to 101%
As part of my event FOMO coping strategy, I will be writing threads on as many talks from #EthCC as I can. I'll be watching these on the livestream and taking notes so us non-Parisians can tune in. 🧶
I cannot start any of this without doing my first one on those who make the entire event possible -- @EthereumFr!
As a non-profit and stewards of Public Goods Ethereum France and ETHCC is a wonderful example of the true spirit of Ethereum. The fact that this conference has been running for so long and grows in size with every annum is a testament to the power of a decentralized community.
