Road Network Classification was done by Kenya Roads Board in January 2016, through Kenya Gazette Supplement No. 4 of 2016.
Roads were assigned new names such as A104 became A8, Class B roads were also upgraded i.e. B1 Mau Summit-Kericho-Kisumu road became A12.

A thread.
Class A roads are roads that link towns of international importance(cities), cross international boundaries or terminate at international ports such as Mombasa.

Class B roads link towns of national importance (county HQs), principal towns or urban centers.
Class A & B roads are maintained, managed, developed and rehabilitated by Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), a pretty significant mandate that the Authority(KeNHA) takes very seriously hence it's made major strides since its inception in 2007. There’s more to be done.
This purely focuses on Class A roads only.

A thread.
A1
A1 road links Tz(Isebania) to Sudan thru Migori, Kisumu, Kakamega, Kitale, Lodwar and goes to Nakodok.

The dualled section as you approach Kisumu town aimmed at dealing with traffic snarl-ups was named Kisumu A1 Dual RHS.

A1 meets A12 at Ahero and meets A8 in Webuye
A2
A2 starts at Namanga border and goes into Ethiopia thru Athi River, Thika, Sagana, Nanyuki, Isiolo, Marsabit and ends in Moyale.

A2_R – being A2 Thika-Kenol-Sagana Dual RHS
A2S – Thika Super highway
A2S – Thika Super highway RHS
A3

A3 branches off A2 at Thika thru Garissa and terminates at the Somali border in Liboi.
A4

A4 starts at Gilgil off A8 (Nairobi-Nakuru) and goes to Nyahururu, Maralal, South Horr, North Horr to Illeret near the Ethiopian border east of L. Turkana.

The road between Naibor(Posta) to Maralal is complete and was recently launched by the president which is part of A4.
A5

A5 has to be one of the fewest known roads which joins Emali off A8-highway and takes one to Oloitoktok, near Kenya’s border with Tanzania.

This road which goes through Oloitoktok is on the backdrop of Mt. Kilimanjaro which is very scenic.
A6

This road joins up Taveta to Voi, through Mwatate. It also goes through Tsavo West National Park and proceeds into Arusha through Holili.

This road was formerly A23 but has been reclassified as above-A6.
A7

It's safe to call this the coastline highway. It begins at Lunga Lunga thru Kwale to Mombasa island via Likoni thru Nyali to Kilifi, Malindi and upto Lamu.

This is the main road that helps tourists to access many coastal places and traverse the coast.
A7 Cont'd

To ease traffic flow, Gatebridge is to be constructed to replace the ferry services the Likoni channel with commencement date set for 2025.
Now off to A9, we’ll look at A8 later coz it’s a big one
A9

This road starts at Subuiga branching off A2 to Meru, Embu, Kitui and meets A8 road at Kibwezi. This road acts like a bypass as it takes you from A2 to A8, being the only class A road that does that.
A10

This road forms part of Kenya’s largest and most ambitious infrastructural development known as LAPSSET. The road here is to allow one to get to Lokichar on A1 road from Lamu through Garissa, Isiolo and Nginyang’.
A10 Cont'd.

On the Kenyan map it mirrors A8 Mombasa-Nairobi road and it’s aimed that this road will serve the northern corridor without using A8. Also since this road goes through Isiolo, it’s intended that Lamu port will serve Ethiopia through A2 road to Moyale.
A10 Cont'd

AU adopted the project being that through Kenya it's a gateway to S. Sudan and Ethiopia while also being like a land bridge for the Africa Great Lakes region. This road forms the key link to Juba, Bangui and Douala in Cameroon.
A10 cont'd

Kenya has started with Lamu Port. The aim is that once LAPSSET is complete it will allow faster access and movement of goods from both shores. India, Far east, Australia to the east and from the Americas and Europe in the west. Yes! Ambitious but possible.
A11

This is the shortest of all Class A roads at only 106.5 km. The road joins Lamu to Kiunga through Budhei and Basuba.

Kiunga town is just 15 kilometres from the Somali border and hosts the Kiunga Marine National Park.
A12

A12 branches off at Total/Mau Summit thru Kericho to Kisumu. Formerly B1 which ended at Kisumu it's been reclassified since the road goes into Uganda via the Busia border.
Between Ahero and Kisumu the road becomes A1. A12 resumes at Kisumu to Busia thru Maseno and Kisian.
A12 Cont'd

The road is the shortest route for cargo headed for Rwanda as opposed to the alternative of A8, Mau Summit-Eldoret to Uganda through the Malaba border.
A13
This road branches off A10 at Sibli and takes you thru Modogashe, Wajir, El Wak to Mandera. A10 is part of LAPSSET.

A13 is part of the Horn of Africa Gateway Development Project which is to by world bank. It aims to improve trade in the northern region and enhance security
A14
This road connects Moyale and Wajir through Buna. From Wajir eastwards the road takes you into Somalia.
Last but not least is A8, Kenya’s major highway that spans from Mombasa port to Malaba border. It also connects three of four Kenyan cities in Mombasa, Nairobi and Nakuru.
A8

Being the main link not only locally but also to Rwanda and Uganda. It's clearly Kenya’s major highway and contributes massively to the country’s revenue.

The road is however prone to traffic snarl-ups especially in Nairobi, hence southern bypass was constructed.
A8 Cont’d

Kenya’s maximum infrastructural development is yet to be achieved so as to maximize the country’s potential. There’s been significant interventions into making this road more efficient in its use. The road has received much needed attention from govt over the years.
Internationally, the road has attracted investors like the U.S who had intent to fund expansion of Nairobi-Mombasa highway thru a grant.

AfDB and the French government have also had their interest in doing the same for the road between Rironi to Mau Summit through PPP model.
What has been achieved at the minute is the 27km Expressway, A8/E. There’s been plenty of euphoria about the expressway but for all there is, an expressway was necessary given the road’s importance.
A8 Cont’d

The road from Nairobi CBD to Rironi has seen various facelifts over the years, one being the dualing of the Rironi-Nairobi A8 Dual RHS, dubbed A8_R2.

A8_R1 was given for the Nakuru stretch that has also been dualled to help ease traffic congestion.
A8_South refers to the stretch of road from Rironi to Naivasha through Mai Mahiu and is expected to help get freight goods to the inland depot in Naivasha.

The road, A8 continues past Nakuru enroute to Eldoret and eventually to the Malaba border.
As you near Eldoret town the road is constricted given it's still a single carriageway. The government thru KeNHA and AfDB has been undertaking the Eldoret bypass being the first of three interventions for the town.
The dualling of the road from Cheptiret to Maili tisa is the first through Eldoret CBD is underway with design already complete.

Another bypass is also in the pipeline to the northern side of Eldoret.
**The End**
