Starting now—a panel with secondary school teachers talking about teaching history during the “History Wars.”

We need to have their backs!

#SHEAR2022
Great line up of secondary school history teachers. Interested to hear their insights on teaching in the here and now.

H.S. Teaching panel: Not students or parents that cause the biggest problems in history teaching in high schools. It’s outside agitators.

#SHEAR2022
Until this year, LA high school history began at 1877. Bypassed the Civil War and slavery altogether.

Changed this year because teachers pushed back.

The dates were broadened. But still—inquiry based learning not encouraged.

#SHEAR2022
Primary sources are essential in broadening high school history conversations. It’s what was said at the time—so hard to argue with it.

Q: Are your students caught up in the culture wars?

They’re aware.
They WANT to know what happened in the past. They’re the good part of the job!

#SHEAR2022
Politicians claiming nonsense—like teachers teaching white students to feel guilty—students KNOW that’s not true. They’re in the classroom—unlike politicians.
#SHEAR2022
How can college professors help high school teaching?

Become involved in schools in your area.

Offer your time to public schools. Give a lecture. Offer advice to new history teachers. Give a book talk. Bridge the gap.

#SHEAR2022
How can professors help high school teaching?

Zoom in and spend a class talking to them. Makes students feel like real historians. Some of the best days in the classroom.

#SHEAR2022
How can professors help high school teaching?

Opinion pieces that offer real insight as historians—personal twist—and NOT dumb down content.

#SHEAR2022
After George Floyd’s murder, high school students began seeking out content and insights on their own. We can help them navigate it.

#SHEAR2022
What can we expect as these high school students move on to college?

Students —some are traumatized. Some lost a year.

#SHEAR2022
As a teacher, never forget your “why”—what brought you to the classroom.

#SHEAR2022
Carefully edited primary sources are particularly useful. A 10-page document is hard to teach in high school.

Offer a primary source with useful questions to ask.

#SHEAR2022
Keep inviting secondary schools to history organizations. Let them connect with people and hear their voice. Can make a big difference.

#SHEAR2022
How can professors help high school teachers?

Write public pieces in support of public history.

#SHEAR2022
What topics do you need support for—materials—for high school teaching?

Reconstruction—

1/ We have been in this situation for several years: we assume—w/o even realizing it—that the US will be ok in the end because it always has been.

That is wrong—& dangerous.
2/ As I’ve said countless times, the idea of American exceptionalism—the idea that the US can’t & won’t fall because it’s special—is blinding us to what’s happening all around us.
3/ The foundations of democracy—free & fair elections, the *belief* in free & fair elections, the accountability of public servants to the American people & the rule of law—are being destroyed right in front of us.

I disagree.

In one night alone, we had DJT insiders acknowledging in no uncertain terms that The Big Lie was a lie.

Did we know that? Yes.

Did we have this kind of proof? No.

The members of Congress who sought pardons for what they did?

We did NOT know that.
Already seeing “it’s pointless & should have been better” — it has nothing new—claims from some on the left.

I’m not sure what hearing they were watching. There were some bombshells last night, with more to come.

I AM sure that that’s a lazy take.
And given that this is—in part—aimed at exposing what really happened—with compelling insider proof—to the public and for the historical record, it MATTERS.

1/ This Friday on "History Matters," I'll be talking about why the coming congressional hearings are vitally important.

Yes, there is performance involved.
Yes, there is a partisan dimension.
But without them, we condone and normalize what happened on January 6.
2/ The hearings will accomplish sev'l imp't things regardless of any ultimate decisions.

1.They show Congress in action defending the political process & itself as an institution.

2. They display evidence so the public can ask questions, weigh possibilities, & draw conclusions.
3/
3. The hearings will present & preserve evidence for the public record & future consideration, shaping the legacies of 1/6.

4. Perhaps most imp't of all, the hearings represent a line in the sand, a public declaration that a line was crossed & violations were committed.

One of the problems inherent in not holding people accountable for political crimes is that it erodes public faith in our institutions of government.

Rapidly.

A fair trial.
Valid evidence.
And if guilty, accountability.
It’s one thing to believe that there’s corruption in government.

It’s quite another to dismiss the entire kit-&-kaboodle as ENTIRELY corrupt.

The latter jeopardizes the entirety of the rule of law.

The former offers tools for fighting corruption. Tools for improvement.
The Framers understood that key—above all else—was the process of government.

Process.

An anchor during times of strife.

That’s the ultimate purpose of the Constitution.

It’s a pact of process.

OK. Turned to #pbsFranklin to watch while I'm running around.

Tuned in to see Clay Jenkinson (my senior essay advisor in college!)
So funny when you hear voices of friends coming from your TV.

Ellen Cohn!

Always such a challenge to find images from the period being depicted. They’re doing a good job—though they’ve certainly had experience!
