For people who say, "What rights don't trans people have?" or "You're overreacting," let's review where we're at now.

1. Total bans on trans athletes, regardless of whether or not they have gone through male puberty.

2. Trans military ban (it will be back) 1/n
3. Bans on transition related care for trans youth in about 10 states, and while only allowing conversion therapy.

4. Investigating supportive parents of trans youth, and possibly charging them with crimes 2/n
5. Conservatives actively calling for the lynching of doctors who treat trans youth

6. Florida appears to be preparing to revoke the licenses of doctors who provide affirming care to any trans person, including adults. 3/n
7. Nearly every major speech by DJT now includes attacks on trans people.

8. Conservative messaging gurus have honed in on calling trans people a threat to women and children. 4/n
9. Trans people are regularly shut down on social media by calling them pedophiles and groomers.

10. Massive online media accounts like Lib of TikTok routinely employs stochastic violence to provide targeting information to its followers. 5/n
11. Any materials that discuss trans people are being treated as obscene, and being removed from libraries.

12. Republicans are trying to force brick and mortar Barnes and Noble bookstores to remove trans related material because it's "obscenity" 6/n
13. Major media outlets in the US are either completely in the tank for people who think society would be better off without trans people (Fox), or willing to credulously platform them (NYT, Atlantic) if they frame it as "just asking questions" 7/n
14. UK media is unrelentingly hostile to trans people, and the public is turning against them as a result. In some ways this is worse than Germany in the 1930's, because all of them are doing it voluntarily. At least some German writers had a gun to their head. 8/n
15. Exporters of fascism, dedicated to destroying democracy while instituting single-party Christian Nationalism throughout the Western World (Putin, Orban), have made trans people a top talking point. Few cis people seems to recognize transphobia as central to neo fascism. 9/n
16. A district court in the 6th Circuit ruled a week ago that the protections provided by EEOC v. Harris do not extend to bathrooms or schools.

17. There is a coordinated ongoing effort to make school so hostile for trans youth that obtaining an education is impossible. 10/n
18. It's a very safe bet that if the DJT/GOP succeeds in their plans to re-enact Schedule F federal employment, policy is going to become extremely hostile to trans people. No more passports, no more gender marker changes anywhere in the federal system. 11/n
19. Speaking of Schedule F, you can bet your ass that every transgender federal employee who falls under this classification (and thus becoming an at-will employee) is getting fired post haste. A purge of trans people from federal service is coming. 12/n
20. When Obergefell falls, it's going to be impossible for most trans people to prove that their marriage is valid. Same thing with their gender markers: TX is going to try mightily not to honor California birth certificates or driver's licenses. 13/n
21. Getting valid government ID is hard for trans people already. We're already seeing bills that try to make it impossible again, like in Idaho and Texas. 14/n
22. Conservatives are now openly talking about the "transgender question" or the "transgender epidemic" (Abigail Shrier), implying that trans people may need to be wiped out for the good of society (Shrier says it more directly). This is pre-genocide language. 15/n
Anyone who has a sense of what happened in the run up to WWII should understand the deep sense of "Oh, f***..." that I feel every day. The parallels are too damned clear. Banning athletes. Forced out of schools. Doctors who treat the community forces out. 16/n
Banned from public spaces and public accommodations. Purges from the military. Purges from the federal service. A universal and unrelenting media ecosystem hostile to the targeted minority. The minority being framed as a threat to women and children. 17/n
The minority in question is framed as both disgusting, pathetic and weak, yet strong enough to destroy the nation and Western Civilization. Bans on getting ID that doesn't single out the minority for discrimination. Bans on positive material related to the minority. 18/n
Talk of the minority's position in society as a question, or problem that must be solved. Or worse, talking of them as a lethal and contagious disease spreading throughout the body politic, that must be cut out like a tumor. 19/n
Yes, this would be less concerning in a democracy where the people promoting these things is a despised political minority (like AfD). But it's not: this is the position of the party that is likely to take permanent control of the government in 2024. 20/n
The people saying, "They wouldn't go that far," are the same ones who assured us the GOP wasn't so crazy as to overturn Roe and leave out exemptions for rape and incest. They're the same one who assured us that establishment Republicans would contain Trump. 21/n
Both Arendt and Adorno warned that the capacity for genocide is part of every culture, i.e. the banality of evil. They were mocked at the time, because the thinking was that only a small group of dedicated Nazis was responsible. Most modern scholars have come around. 22/n
The GOP and Tory is being whipped into a hateful frenzy. Unrelenting negative media is making the rest of the public apathetic to the fate of trans people. Should democracy fall, the GOP base is going to get to decide how to answer the "transgender question." 23/n
You know, the same base that tried to lynch Mike Pence, and has decided dying of an ectopic pregnancy is OK, because everyone gets to go to heaven that way. Who are ready to lynch doctors who provide care to trans youth. The ones calling us pedophiles and groomers. 24/n
The ones who think Western Civilization cannot survive if trans people do.

So, just what do you think the odds are that they'll decide trans people deserve to live when they have the power to decide?

Yeah. That's the calculus. 25/n

Let's talk about what's going to happen with Obergefell now that Roe has gone away, and walk through what now appears to be one of the more likely scenarios now. The article below has some great details, but doesn't speculate much. 1/n 19thnews.org/2022/07/oberge…
First, the GOP has been unpleasantly surprised by the blowback to the Dobbs decision, and they're holding off a bit until after the November 2022 mid-term election. Though some have made noises that they will head that direction later. 2/n washingtonpost.com/politics/2022/…
However, there's the wild card of the Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF). They are much less concerned with playing respectability politics, and would provide a convenient excuse for folks like Paxton to push for overturning Obergefell. 3/n

This is becoming a more and more common talking point among the right: American democracy, will be destroyed because they are degenerate. The rise of fascism is inevitable and necessary to fight degeneracy.

And when they say "degenerates", they mean trans people.
This is worrying (for me), because it sets us up for potential genocide if US democracy falls, and the ruling party has convinced its base that the only way to restore America's greatness is to eliminate "degenerates". damemagazine.com/2022/03/15/tra…
Sadly, I know that if I hadn't run a blocking algorithm, I'd be getting quite a few replies from right wing accounts replying to this telling me that of course Peterson is right, and they're looking forward to putting all the degenerates in camps.

The attacks on trans people coming from center-left and "centrist" media sources like the NYT is very much part of the bigger plan by the right. The goal is to undercut any potential resistance to what comes next. 1/n
For years, people on the right like Jordan Peterson and Tucker Carlson have banged away at the idea that trans people have gone too far, and as a result fascists will take over and commit a new Holocaust against trans people and won't that be so sad (wink wink not really) 2/n
Now, with the entire right wing apparatus behind them in the US, and all of the media in the UK, they're moving on to the next target: center-left US media and heretofore supportive people on the left. The goal is to convince them of the same things the right already is: 3/n

SCOTUS has opened Pandora's box. They've reverted to an extreme "states' rights" position that allows red states to end civil rights and oversight of corporations. Blue states like CA are going to try to drive the market with sanctuary laws and their own regs. 1/n
We're heading precisely towards the next phase of the American implosion: Two Americas, like in post-reconstruction and Jim Crow. What will (likely) determine if we move on to the next phase of dystopia is (again) the courts. 2/n
If SCOTUS allows Texas to prosecute women who leave the state for abortions, and to prosecute doctors who perform abortions outside the state (or provide medications like Plan B), that ignites the next crisis: 3/n

With the end of Roe v. Wade, and access to abortion disappearing in half the US, let's talk about the law of unintended consequences: namely, the awful downstream effects of this ruling. 1/n
First, there's maternal mortality. Poland has gone down this road, and the result is doctors who will let a woman die rather than going to jail for performing an abortion. With US states making it punishable by life in prison, many women will die. 2/n
nytimes.com/2022/06/12/wor…
Then there's infant mortality. Most later-term abortions are due to discovering fetal abnormalities inconsistent with life. Women will be forced to carry fetuses to term that won't make it to their 1st or 5th birthday, regardless of medical intervention. 3/n
