πŸ‘‘ | Michael Jackson & Prince did NOT hate each other β€” a Thread | β˜”

English translation from @ThePrice0fFame's thread.
In January 1997 in an interview with Chris Rock, Prince is asked about his duet with Michael on the song "Bad" which unfortunately never happened. Prince was originally cast to play Wesley Snipes' charecter in the Bad short film but he declined the offer.
"It was an interesting meeting though. No rivalry." Those are Prince's words about what happened.

The truth is that Prince and Michael had mutual respect for each other and the fact that the duet didn't work out didn't change their relationship at all.
Still about Bad. In the book "On Time: A Princely Life in Funk", Morris Day recounts a conversation he had with Prince in the late 1980s, sometime after the release of Bad, where the singer explains again why the Bad duet didn't come out.
Again Prince claims there is no rivalry, just admiration and healthy competition between them.

Prince knew that the song Bad had potential in its own right and that Michael didn't need him in it to make it successful.
Returning to Chris's interview, the comedian jokes about the 1993 p3d0phiIia allegations against Michael, and Prince tries to deal with it as "lightly" as he can.

The singer jokes around pretending to leave, but then he comes back and says something brief but important about it:
Even though Prince didn't want to talk about it, he implied his point of view on how the press shouldn't speculate about what's going on.
There is a legal system, and at some point the truth will come out. You shouldn't speculate before hearing what people have to say.

And only after subtly giving his opinion does Prince change the subject.
In May 2000, Prince held a press conference where he was asked about MJ. The easygoing question of "who would win in a fistfight, him or Michael?" eventually led Prince into another topic.

At the time some people found what he said confusing but I'll explain what I understood:
Basically Prince is saying that people should chill/relax because there is another side of the story (something MJ knows that none of us know) and that we shouldn't judge, but just wait and see, because you have no way of knowing what happened if not hear both sides of the story.
And that ultimately we all have to go home, that is, we all have a home, our off-camera life, our private life. And as such, we must make a home not only for ourselves but for everyone. Come forward and extend a helping hand to another person cause that person is just like us.
Let's make a home with love, not hate. And not wrongfully condemning someone based on just one side of the story, neither based on false accusations nor based on what the media feeds us, which is often completely misleading.
At the beginning of 2005, absolutely all that was said was about the new allegations involving Michael. His reputation had been tarnished since 1993 and many of his "friends" turned their backs on him that year. And whoever didn't turn his back on him in '93 did so in 2005.
In 2005 the last thing anyone wanted was to be associated with MJ. We know today that he was and /always/ was innocent, but at that time the media smeared him so much that people found him guilty even before the trial took place.
In other words, supporting, defending or just talking about Michael could tarnish one's public image. That's why almost no one has taken a public stand for Michael. Others preferred not even to give their opinion, either for or against him.
Not only that, but his songs began to be boycotted by radio stations. In short, 2005 was the "We don't talk about Michael" year.

But well, guess who wasn't afraid to show which side they were on? Yeah, Prince.
Michael's trial began on February 28, 2005, at the Santa Maria courthouse in Santa Barbara. Coincidentally, on the same day Prince was due to perform in Beverly Hills.
At a time when Michael's songs were being completely canceled, with radio stations refusing to play them, Prince decided to play the song "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" on his concert.

If that's not taking a stand for Michael, then I don't know what is.
Around the same time, many people said that during the trial, Prince deleted hateful comments against MJ from his fan forum and banned the users responsible for those comments.
In April 2004, Prince gave a radio interview where the interviewer mockingly mentions the false accusations of p3d0phiIia that Michael was facing.

During the conversation Prince is clearly not amused by the ridiculous attempt at humor and seems annoyed at the turn of the conversation. Realizing that Prince was not amused, the interviewer returns to talking about Prince's music.
The press loves to talk about Michael and Prince hating each other, but as I showed before Prince had already said that there was no rivalry, that they had great admiration for each other.

But not only that, Prince more than once explicitly referred to Michael as his friend.
Before the song "Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)" starts playing, Prince announces it as one of his friend's songs.

"We're gonna do one of my friend right now"

Show in Arras, France July 9, 2010.
Again in 2010 Prince sings the song "Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)" in tribute to Michael.

"This is for my friend"

There are many other recordings of him referring to Michael as his friend, even before Michael died. But I'll just leave these so the thread doesn't get longer than it already is.

Another thing that's important to point out is how Prince handled Michael's death.
Prince was never fully open about it with the press, but we can still find some statements from him about what happened.
In October 14, 2009 Prince gave an interview to a French newspaper. In the course of the interview he mentions Michael more than once, you can read the whole interview here: sites.google.com/site/prninterv…

But the part I want to highlight is this:
After Prince's death,Tavis Smiley told how the singer reacted when he received the news of Michael's death

Prince, who at the time was preparing for the Monterey Jazz Festival, canceled rehearsals and sent everyone home.He locked himself in his room and didn't come out for days.
Days later after the Festival, Prince and Tavis went to the suite where Prince was staying and for hours until the sun came up all Prince could talk about was his respect and admiration for Michael.

You can see the interview here:
Years later in 2014 during an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, among the many things Prince was asked one of them was about Michael's d34th.

You can read it here: vibe.com/music/music-ne…
The question was if he thinks he could’ve prevented Michael's d34th.

To which Prince replied: β€œI don’t want to talk about it. I'm too close to it".
As mentioned before, Prince had a hard time dealing with Michael's d34th and even after 5 years he still couldn't speak publicly about the loss of his friend.
I want to point out that BEFORE and AFTER Michael's d34th, Prince occasionally included some of Michael's songs in his concerts.
Something interesting to note is that the periods when Prince most played Michael's music coincide with the times when Michael most needed someone by his side.
Between the years 2003 and 2005 with the allegations, in 2006 when Michael self-isolated himself after the trial, and then in 2009/2010 after his death. These were all moments when Prince was most publicly present for Michael and honored him through his music.
In a scenario where the world seemed to want to destroy Michael, it was as if Prince was saying through his music "u r not alone, u still have people who believe in u", and after his death the message was now "u r no longer here, but ur soul will always be here with all of us."
That's it folks. After all this I hope you guys finally understand that Michael and Prince didn't have a quarrel with each other or hate each other. Their friendship may not have been public like many others, but that doesn't make it any less real.
There's still a lot I could say about their relationship, but the thread has gotten way too long. I just hope this serves to clarify their relationship. And if you see someone saying that Prince and Michael hated each other, tag them here so they can get informed, okay?
Prince and Michael were two musical geniuses who respected and admired each other, and it's honestly disrespectful to spread false rumors about their relationship just to gain attention.

May they rest in peace wherever they are.
EXTRA: Prince playing Bad's intro at his concert in November 7, 1988.

EXTRA 3: Apollonia Kotero talking about Prince's admiration for Michael.
