#tdih 1932: U.S. gov't attacked WWI vets with tanks, bayonets, & tear gas, under leadership of textbook heroes MacArthur, Patton, & Eisenhower. The WWI vets were part of a Bonus Army who came to D.C. to demand promised wartime bonuses.

"While they may have fought in Europe as a segregated army, the Bonus Army did not invite Jim Crow to this battle.
Arriving from all over the country, alone or with wives and children, both Black and white vets huddled together, in what they called ‘Hoovervilles.'" #TeachTruth
"Despite the fact that the Bonus Army was made up of 95 percent veterans, the entire group were labeled 'Red agitators' — tantamount to declaring open season on an oppressed group of U.S. citizens. Right on cue, Hoover called out the troops." #TeachOutsideTextbook#RedScare
Calling Bonus Marchers "Red agitators" is part of long history of using Red Scare & McCarthyism to attack labor & civil rights organizing.
Medgar Evers investigated murders of African Americans that police ignored & blocked. He conducted interviews, sought evidence, demanded justice, & exposed white supremacist violence & terrorism. 📷Evers interviews Melton about murder of husband. She "died" before testifying.
Sound familiar?
Not only did the police not investigate murders of African Americans, they blocked efforts by Evers & others to do so.
Evers risked his life to do the work the police were supposed to. #Uvalde
THIS is the history the right is censoring with "anti-CRT" bills.
Young people are taking on the world. Right is trying to squash that activism by censoring lessons. Media gives “anti-CRT” campaign oversized coverage.
The goal of the “anti-CRT” project is to strip the classroom of its potential as a powerful democratic space, where students learn from history how to shape a more just future.
We need to expose the right’s agenda and be visible in our defense of teaching people’s history.
If there is a Teach Truth Day of Action event near you, join in.

#tdih 1959 Palo Verde, La Loma, & Bishop were close-knit Mexican American communities, founded in 1840s, that the city of LA destroyed to make way for land that would be used for Dodger Stadium.
"My family and I fought every way we knew how to stay in our home in Chavez Ravine. Police had to carry my daughter, Aurora Vargas from our house. . . we lost our home and our land, but we didn’t lose our pride because we fought with everything we had." -- Manuel Arechiga
Frank Wilkinson, representative from L.A. Housing Authority who came to defense of the families, was targeted and jailed by House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC). (Real purpose of #RedScare)
Earlier that month, Rev. Lee spoke at Regional Council of Negro Leadership convening in all-Black town of Mound Bayou.
Journalist Simeon Booker of Jet, observed how Lee’s “down-home dialogue and his sense of political timing” had “electrified” the crowd. zinnedproject.org/materials/shoc…
The sheriff claimed Rev. Lee died in a car accident & that the lead pellets that filled his face from shotgun buckshot were "dental fillings torn loose by impact of the crash."
In fact, he was murdered by white supremacists who were protected by "law enforcement." #TeachTruth
During Reconstruction, the Constitution finally became a document that people could cite in arguments for equality.
14th Amend., ratified in 1868, demanded equal protection of the laws & due process of law for all people. It authorized Congress to enforce these principles. 2/7
But soon after its enactment, SCOTUS interpreted the 3 Reconstruction Amend's (13th, 14th, 15th) extremely narrowly & Congress retreated from its commitment to use them to protect Black people & democracy itself from white supremacist terror & fraud. 3/7 zinnedproject.org/materials/they…
#tdih 1905 Robert Abbott founded "Chicago Defender" -- goal: “American Race Prejudice Must Be Destroyed.”

In articles, lessons, textbooks, podcasts about 20th century, they often identify "Black press" but otherwise report on "the press."
The "white press" or "corporate media" should also be named as such.
We recommend the documentary "The Black Press: Soldiers Without Swords" by @StanleyNelson1 via California Newsreel.
Any study of U.S. history should include central, critical role of Black press, & the constant threats and attacks by white supremacists. zinnedproject.org/materials/sold…
