Any discussion like this that doesn't bring up the incredible dishonesty and toxicity of FoxNews/rightwing media, and how they have distorted our politics, is largely a waste of time. And of course these talks are limited by
nytimes.com/interactive/20…
the understanding of our complex political system by the average voter. Really disturbing there wasn't push back on DeSantis being a strong leader... ugh.
It really can't be pointed out enough how incredibly destructive FoxNews has been to American politics. IMO it's the number 1 problem we have with politics. The bad faith, lies & distortion they broadcast about Dems/liberals is literally endless.
Take Covid19 for instance. There’s no way we would have had the ridiculous demonization of Tony Fauci and all the resistance to Covid19 control measures without Fox News. They *killed* Americans. Also we wouldn’t have had a president Trump without Fox News. #FoxNewsKills

My chair is quite the writer-- his out-of-office email text:
"Hi,
I'm on vacation. Like real vacation. Like I threatened people that I wasn't taking my laptop vacation. So I'm pretty unlikely to respond before August 1st. Now if you really, really need something, you can try and
find someone from the list below to deal with your requests, problems, and crises. Note that ... is also off during this time, so honestly, the Department is currently completely lacking in leadership. Like when I'm there.
If you need immediate help you can contact (...)

Cassie, my cat, for any emeowgencies

Now I realize there's a chance that you're still reading this and I'm starting to wonder if you don't have something better to do. I mean I know it's the last week of July, but if all you're doing is spending your day reading

"So, about those gas prices. As economists at the St. Louis Fed recently pointed out, there’s a longstanding phenomenon in the fuel market known as asymmetric pass-through or, more colorfully, rockets and feathers.
When oil prices shoot up, prices at the pump shoot up right along with them (the rocket). And when oil prices plunge, prices at the pump eventually fall, but much more gradually (the feather).
Why this asymmetry? There have been a number of economic papers trying to understand it, pretty much all of which stress the market power of companies that face limited competition ... The clearest explanation I’ve seen is in a relatively old paper

A must-read piece
"And then, watching what happened to the Republican Party really was the bigger surprise — that, wow, they’re doubling down on this almost white supremacist strategy. That’s a losing strategy in a democracy."
washingtonpost.com/magazine/2022/…
"So why would they do that? Okay, it’s worked for them since the ’60s & ’70s, but you can’t turn back demographics. And then I was like, Oh my gosh. The only way this is a winning strategy is if you begin to weaken the institutions; this is the pattern we see in other countries."
"And the second stage, you start to have a few isolated attacks.

And in the manual, it says, really the danger in this stage is that governments and citizens aren’t aware that this is happening."

Since I'm getting slammed with people promoting "natural immunity" for COVID19 over vaccination, I do want to clarify that the issue is not (and never has been) that people *can't* have protective natural immunity for COVID19. The #1 point is that it is much much more dangerous
to get infected with SARS-CoV-2 than to get vaccinated, because of a much much high rate of severe disease and even death from infection than being vaccinated, even now with all the various treatments we have for the disease. I'm not sure why this isn't super obvious though
I know there are some people convinced that vaccination is more dangerous than getting the disease. But there's no evidence for that and if you believe that, I don't think there's anything I can say to change your mind. The other part of "natural immunity" is it is more

Some guy emailed me at work, presumably inspired by my twitter tirade yesterday, saying that I would get more respect and more positive feedback if I promoted a good diet for health and better resistance to COVID19. So yes, a good diet and exercise will increase your odds of
not dying from COVID19-- if you've done that for long enough time to prevent getting the types of metabolic syndromes and diseases that weaken the immune system and make one susceptible to disease overall. But still that doesn't completely prevent you from getting severely ill or
dying from COVID19. Plus it takes time and isn't always practical for people to suddenly change their diet and lifestyle especially if they are poor or have busy jobs. So the top priority to keep from getting COVID19 is still the same advice we get from public health experts:
