Interesting - from Decentralized Internet Infrastructure Research Group slides at #IETF114 (part of Internet Research Task Force, IRTF) in 3 slide snapshots 🧵 datatracker.ietf.org/meeting/114/ma…
Ok - that is more than 3 slides 😆 They were too interesting...

Broadband: the bigger picture… Folks tend to over-focus on near-term changes in tech & business – missing forest for the trees. This past week I think I just saw a preview of what I think will be the biggest leap forward since broadband was created. (this is my personal take) 🧵
Since the 90s, networks have done a great job delivering ever greater speeds & amazing apps have developed to take advantage. That created the Internet we know & depend on today. It’s pretty awesome & we love it & it works great. But… what if it could be radically better?
Over time a small cadre of engineers, developers & researchers around the world started to realize that speed wasn’t the only factor influencing end user quality...
Downloaded Google's location data about me. Pretty interesting. Some random stuff. First - looks like I am near some specific stores in a strip mall sort of area.
Then my means of travel...
Here's when I went to a garden center to look around. I didn't remember that but I guess Google did. 😆
ELI5: Today's Facebook outage (based on no inside info). Internet is designed in layers, like house built on a foundation. No coordination between layers - but there's dependency. 1st meaningful part is "layer 3" - the Internet Protocol (IP) network layer. [thread] /1
The DNS generally (not always) depends on what is known as the User Datagram Protocol (UDP) for transport - which is layer 4 on top of IP at layer 3. Then the DNS protocol itself happens at layer 7 on top of IP addressing/routing and UDP transport. /2
Specifically most DNS runs on UDP port 53 (aka UDP/53). There are different "port" numbers - unique numbers - assigned for specific uses. This makes operations/troubleshooting/interop easier. Find 'em all at iana.org/assignments/se… /3
