During the trial, viral posts about Johnny Depp and Amber Heard were almost all in favor of Depp, but things are starting to shift. I wanted to break down some of the ways individuals were able to fight back against the misinformation & harassment campaign 🪡
To preface: I think that these efforts are important to highlight because they show how to fight back against the modern smear campaign playbook. What happened during the trial will continue to happen in cases involving celebrities, but also in politics, social justice, etc
Two of the people who have had the most impact are @cocainecross and @k4mil1aa. Both create threads that distill important info from court docs and testimony for social media, which is how the pro-Depp creators amassed widespread support for him in the first place
Here's an example of one of @k4mil1aa's threads that went viral with important info that has been twisted into misinfo online. I've since seen people in TikTok comments, for example, directing confused individuals to her account & threads.
Threads may seem like low hanging fruit in our polluted information ecosystem, but they're not. They provide a quick "explainer" model that can gain traction in the way a long article or video can't. Some journalists recognize this and make threads for their stories
When it comes to pollution (misinfo, disinfo, smear campaigns) in the information ecosystem, it's hard to remove those pollutants. Social media companies don't have a good way to clear out falsehoods, and the idea that we should combat fake news has been politicized
So what do we do when we can't get rid of the fake news? We create alternatives with legitimate information and fact-checking and evidence that are in the same format as the disinfo, so that it reaches the same audience as the disinfo.
Twitter is an easier platform to do this on than YouTube or TikTok, because both require more effort & tech savvy in creating video (both longform and shortform). That's why pro-Depp narratives still dominate those platforms, because there are more pro-Depp creators
And the trick of these pro-Depp creators is that they brand their content as objective or even journalistic, when it's actually propaganda. They're propagandists. And they make a LOT of money & engagement from creating propaganda.
On the flip side, with pro-Heard creators, there isn't a monetary incentive. If you are compiling objective threads about the trial, you're probably doing it out of your own desire to clean up our information ecosystem. Basically, the system relies on more good actors than bad
The good actors can't necessarily profit in the same way the propagandists can, so this presents an unequal playing field. We need more salaried journalists to make the same type of content. But right now we have awesome indie creators like @cocainecross and @k4mil1aa
Moving away from Twitter, there are some other areas online that have been working to combat the disinfo around the trial. The r/deuxmoi and r/deppdelusion subreddits are good examples. These spaces are much smaller/less active than the pro-Depp spaces, though
These smaller spaces and creators have to operate under the constant threat of harassment and having the propagandists and their supporters aiming their collective smear efforts at the objective or pro-Heard info sources (just survey my replies)
I wish I knew more ways to combat online harassment and intimidation, but there are no easy answers & it can take a huge personal toll. So I'll end this thread by thanking the creators I mentioned as well as anyone who has had the courage & honesty to cover this trial fairly

The social media movement around Depp/Heard was, for many, a continuation of Gamergate. That’s why it’s important that we continue to explore what happened, because it didn’t end with the trial.
Depp/Heard was, I would argue, even WORSE than Gamergate because the people who accepted the conspiracy at the heart of Depp’s defense were oftentimes the demographic that would have OPPOSED Gamergate. It included a demographic of women, DV survivors, and liberals
Most people don’t know what Gamergate is outside very online circles, but EVERYONE knew about the trial and saw the anti-Amber propaganda. It also caused a huge population to lose faith in the mainstream media, because they didn’t understand why MSM questioned the conspiracy

Taking down the Wendy Williams Show’s YouTube channel is so disrespectful to her legacy and removes a massive stream of monetization for Wendy that she deserved
The treatment and erasure of Wendy Williams really bothers me because she’s an iconic Black female entertainer and host and she deserves the respect that all her peers receive
But on top of that Wendy has openly struggled with her health and to remove her catalogue from YouTube and thus restrict her from earnings on viral videos is unwarranted

For people who have been studying the misinformation campaign around the Depp v Heard trial, this verdict is chilling. The success of Depp’s “redemption arc” narrative reveals a lot about our social media platforms and ourselves.

A thread of things I learned during Depp v Heard:
Media literacy around this trial was abhorrent. Most people, even if they say they did, DID NOT watch the trial. They watched TikToks and YouTube videos, most of which were biased for a clear economic purpose. That’s not the same thing.
What economic purpose? Well, follow the money. Most of the viral content around the trial fell into a dichotomy of “Johnny good, Amber bad.” As long as your content fit that narrative, it could increase your views, audience, and earnings.

NEW: YouTube terminated Shanny For Christ today, a creator who was arrested for domestic abuse in 2019 and was just accused of livestreaming child endangerment this week. YouTube told me she violated child safety policies, but that's not the whole story.
businessinsider.com/shannyforchris…
This story illustrates the flaws in YouTube’s moderation system. First off, creators have been ringing alarm bells for years about Shanny (Shannon Dornbush) and got ignored. Team YouTube initially said her June 1 livestream was okay.
When I reached out to a YouTube representative, though, YouTube confirmed that the livestream violated its child safety policy. Here’s the second tweet from Team YouTube that reverses position and shows they took the video down.

I didn’t expect to wake up to a call from my editor telling me a YouTuber with 2.8M subscribers uploaded a secretly recorded phone call with me.

I really didn’t expect that YouTuber to then reveal on a livestream that he didn’t read the article he made a 20-min video about.
.@jeffwittek , thanks for apologizing. At one point as @trishapaytas and @h3h3productions explained to you for over an hour why that apology was necessary, you admitted that you intended to send your fans to attack me for writing the article you did not read.
They did! I received more than one detailed death threat today. And literally hundreds of hate comments and direct messages.

The other thing I will say about this clip, which is really bothering people — before Jeff asked me if I was sorry, he told me people were calling him a rapist & pedophile. I was apologizing because he had to experience that.
I would actually love for Jeff to release this entire conversation, which he recorded late at night (for me) without my consent. He used a lot of manipulation tactics to try and get me to say things knowing he would use them against me.
He spent most of the call complaining that he was losing sponsorships and getting hate because of my story. Then he flat-out made a video insinuating that I should lose my job and be attacked for including information he himself gave me in our interview.
