Impressive build-up from #Nagelsmann & #Bayern leading to the fourth goal against #Leipzig.

A lot of interesting takeaways, with many of the principles applicable for teams at every level. I will try to outline these in a long-thread below🧵(1/15)
Playing out short from a goal kick is no easy task, with the opponent having sufficient time to set up the pressing structure & prepare the press. Time/space is often limited, meaning teams have to play at a higher tempo (faster decision-making and execution) (2/15)
The main goal with playing short from goal kicks is to create a spacio-temporal advantage further up the pitch by breaking lines (dribbling or passing) and transfer numerical advantages from the back to the front (against the last defensive line) (3/15)
Other positive outcomes could be to find open space without achieving any kind of superiority against the last defensive line, but making the opponent pull back and re-adjust their pressing height. (4/15)
During #Bayern's build up Neuer plays directly to Davies, breaking the first line of pressure & attracting pressure from the next line. Note: The speed of Neuer's pass is important, as it provides extra time for Davies execute the next action (5/15)
Also evident in the last picture is that Leipzig try to equalize the situation by moving the two forwards closer to Neuer/Sabitzer & the central defenders, meaning Davies' support options is closed down (6/15)
In equal situations when the ball is wide, a team could use the following principle:
• Play far-Play back-Play out of pressure
Short story: Find a player w/pressure (far away), attract pressure to free up others, find a forward-facing player w/overview to find open space (7/15)
The idea behind this principle is:
• By playing far (and/or inside) the pass attract pressure because it break lines. Playing the pass more inside will probably attract more pressure & attention, compared to a pass along the sideline (8/15)
• By playing back the target is to find a player facing forward with overview of open space. Its important that the 'back pass' is resolved in few touches (preferably 1-touch). In #JdP this principle is called play the way you face (don't turn with pressure) (9/15)
• Having found a forward-facing player with more space its easier to get the ball out from pressure (into free space). As Sabitzer is the forward facing player, he break lines, finds Coman as the free man & #Bayern create a spacio-temporal advantage (numerical/positional)(10/15)
Side-note: To achieve the goal of spacio-temporal advantage against the last line, teams should add players from lines below to increase superiority (when breaking lines). This also serves well when finishing the attack 11/15)
Having created a spacio-temporal advantage v the last DL it resembles a counter-attacking situation, where some of the same principles apply:
• Attack quickly (in order to maintain advantage) (12/15)
• In numerical advantage situations (and some equal situations) a principle is to create a 2v1 against 1⃣of the players in the DL (preferably an opponent w/out cover) (13/15)
Coman times his pass to Müller who's positioned himself at the same height as the defensive line. The body profile of the Leipzig-player (white circle) allows Müller to have the opposite momentum against him & the 2v1 is successfully solved leading to a shot from Müller (14/15)
• Finishing the attack (avoid counter-attacks) is important & by attacking with numbers to create an encirclement around the goal, to create 2nd shots (control rebounds) is important. #Nagelsmann & #Rangnick spoke about this concept (force your luck) in DAZN’s ‘DECOD3D’ (15/15)
