This is the #Malegaon fort in #Maharashtra. It witnessed not one but two different instances of Indian Muslims’ resistance against British

In 1818, during third Anglo-Maratha war, Muslim soldiers of Maratha army defiantly held the fort; even as Chatrapati & Peshwa surrendered
30 soldiers died & many more were injured during siege of the fort. It took the British 36 guns, 8,000 shells & 35,500 pounds of gunpowder to finally take over the fort

Almost a 100 years later, in 1921, the bugle of revolution was again sounded in Malegaon
The people of Malegaon had responded to Khilafat & Non-Cooperation movement of 1920 with enthusiasm. They’d boycotted British institutions, set up their own courts & picketed liquor shops. The British provoked violence in order to clamp down against revolutionary activities.
In a clash between the revolutionaries and police, a native constable was killed. The revolutionaries took over control of the city, British flag was downed from Malegaon fort & replaced with an Indian flag.
An Indian Government headed by Shah Suleman Miya was formed. The British responded with unprecedented violence against the people of Malegaon. People were indiscriminately taken into custody and were sent to Yerwada jail. Reportedly ₹1.2 million was forcibly collected as fine
In 1922, Suleman Shah, Israil Allahrakha, Shaban Bhikari, Budhu Faridan & Abdul Gafoor were hanged. 9 people were sentenced to life imprisonment, 2 each for 7 & 5 years. Another 92 were sentenced to 3 years’ jail. Abdullah Khalifa & Mohd Husain were killed by torture in jail

Continuing with our efforts to remember Indian Muslims' great contribution in the war of independence, today we remember Maulana Barkatullah Bhopali. Born and initially educated in Bhopal, the Maulana lit the fire of India's freedom across the world. 1/n Image
He was a staunch anti-colonialist, Vice-President of the Ghadar movement, a strident defender of Hindu-Muslim unity and the Prime Minister of the Government of India in exile, set up in Afghanistan. Its President was Raja Mahendra Pratap. 2/n Image
The trailblazer Maulana was an "NRI" but one whose life was committed to India. In his revolutionary lifetime, he would visit London (1895) United States (1903), Japan (1909), Germany (1914), Turkey, Afghanistan (1915), Soviet Union (1919), France, Rome (1924) & Belgium (1927)3/n

If the economy is doing so well, why has the government not fixed OROP pensions and given the arrears to our soldiers, despite Supreme Court orders to do it by June. The OROP pension was to be fixed in 2019 in any case. timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/revision…
If the economy is doing so well, why is our Air Force having only 30 squadrons of fighter jets instead of 42? Is that not why you are forcing our brave pilots to fly the Mig21 instead of phasing them out?
It the economy is doing so well, why has our Navy been forced to curtail its ambitions of being a 200-ship navy to barely having 130 ships? Why is the Navy not being given the third aircraft carrier it asks for if the economy is doing so well?

“Tell the Maulana not to worry about his son. What is destined to happen by Allah’s will, will happen. But he must not break before the Raja and seek mercy”

Remembering a forgotten heroine of our freedom movement “Amma Bi” Asiya Khatoon Mewati.
The brave woman said these words as she faced the world alone, with her son being severely ill & while her husband Maulana Mohammad Ibrahim Khan Alwari was imprisoned for his participation in freedom movement. He’d participated in Salt Satyagrah with Gandhiji & was also injured
Amma Bi exemplified the bravery of Indian Muslim women as she resisted British rule. Born in 1918, she was from the historic Firozpur (Mewat, Haryana)

Her husband’s arrest did not deter her. She worked with his followers & companions and took the fight forward

Yesterday @aimim_national organised a full day academic conference to remember Indian Muslims’ rich contribution in our freedom movement. Starting today, I will be sharing some stories of these great men and women till 14 August
1. Maulana Alauddin, Turrebaaz Khan & the martyrs of 17 July, 1857

On 17th July, 1857, 5000-6000 freedom fighters of Hyderabad made a daring attack on the British Residency building (now University Women’s College, Koti) to free the imprisoned mutineer Jamedar Cheeda Khan
The attack was led by the firebrand Maulvi Syed Alauddin & Turrebaz Khan. More than 30 people died in the attack and many more were injured. Maulvi Alauddin has the distinction of being the first prisoner at the “Kala Paani” Cellular Jail in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands

Today the govt called an all party meeting on the Sri Lanka crisis. However, it used the opportunity to raise unrelated issues about finances of Indian states 1/n
1. @DrSJaishankar in his initial remarks said that there’s a “misinformed campaign & comparison between India & Sri Lanka”. If so why did DEA have to make a presentation? Many opposition parties opposed this politicisation. 2/n
2. I cited a report from May 24 that clearly indicated an impending fiscal crisis in SL. I asked if what Modi govt was doing to help SL was too little, too late. The govt denied it but a request was made by Gotabaya, he’d in fact tweeted about it too 3/n thehindu.com/news/internati…

Zilch. This is the outcome of the talks. These words mean nothing except show up the Modi government as weak and clueless. The government is no longer talking of restoring the status quo ante while Modi is unable to even say China.
Our foreign minister @DrSJaishankar meets the Chinese counterpart at Bali and doesn’t even state that bilateral ties won’t be normal unless border crisis is resolved. @PMOIndia is keen to attend to SCO summit with Xi after attending the BRICS summit. Is this our strategy?
My question is simple. The Chinese are controlling our territory in Ladakh for over two years now. We are unable to get them out of that area. Is Modi going to take the responsibility for this failure when he personally met Xi 18 times before 2020?
