Biden told Xi "that if China entered the war in Ukraine on Russia’s side, Beijing would be risking access to its two most important export markets — the US and EU ... China has responded by not providing military aid to Putin," Friedman writes
He also buried this: "U.S. officials are a lot more concerned about Ukraine’s leadership than they are letting on. There is deep mistrust between the White House and President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine — considerably more than has been reported."
Friedman suggests that some of this is due to Zelensky firing the top security official in Ukraine, but that had been on the cards for a while. He clearly hasn't read @ChristopherJM's excellent scoop from June on this:
Lavrov gives the biggest official signal yet that Russia is planning to annex southern Ukraine.
"Now the geography has changed. It's not just Donetsk and Luhansk, it's Kherson, Zaporizhia, and several other territories. And this is an ongoing process, consistent and insistent."
This has not exactly been a secret. When peace talks with Ukraine collapsed in the spring, Putin made it clear he saw no prospect for a peaceful settlement and appeared determined to capture as much Ukrainian territory as possible.
Russia started appointing separatist officials to run the territories it occupies in southern Ukraine. The occupation authorities made the ruble legal tender. Senior Russian functionaries visited and said things like "Russia is here forever."
Putin's set to make an "extremely important speech" with "a profound assessment of the reasons for what's happening" at @SPIEF, Russia's top economic event.
It's already been pushed back an hour – the Kremlin says cyberattacks took down the entry system.
@SPIEF Once a brash and glitzy affair, this year's forum is muted. Regulars are glum about Russia's future under sanctions.
“Every year I would sign something with the Italians or the Japanese or whoever. Now there’s nothing to sign and nobody to sign it with.”
At the St Petersburg forum, Russia’s top economic officials are discussing how to respond to the country’s economic crisis and warning things won’t go back to normal.
None of them, however, have said *why* there is an economic crisis. Not pictured: the elephant in the room
Another panel about "the dictatorship of neoliberalism," hosted by Russia's foreign ministry spokeswoman and top propagandists, features the convicted drug smuggler recently traded for Trevor Reed and the author of that genocidal RIA Novosti op-ed
Moderator: Will the dollar be banned?
Nabiullina: No!
*applause*
Half the Ukraine team hasn’t even played a real match in months and they’re still completely dominating this
Liked Ukraine a lot at the Euros but think they’re actually looking better tonight. Malinovsky wasn’t great then but he and Zinchenko are bossing midfield
Wondering how many Scotland players would get into the Dynamo Kyiv first 11
It’s May 9th in Russia, so you know what that means – time to get the nuclear ICBMs out
Here’s defense minister Sergei Shoigu, who has rarely appeared in public for the two and a half months of Russia’s war in Ukraine. You wouldn’t know it from the medals, but he never served a day in the army
And here’s Putin, flanked by World War II veterans.
He draws a direct parallel between Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and World War II victory.
“Defending Russia is always sacred… you are fighting for our people in the Donbas, for the security of our motherland.”
Putin: "If anyone decides to meddle in ongoing events and create unacceptable strategic threats for Russia, they must know our response will be lightning-quick.
"We have all the instruments for this, ones nobody else can boast of. And we will use them, if we have to."
Putin says Russia wants to be friends with Ukraine "can't allow an anti-Russia to be created on Russia's historical territory." He claims Ukraine was being "pushed" to attack Crimea and Donbas and says the west was using the Ukrainian people as "expendable materials"
"The countries that have historically tried to contain Russia don't need a self-sufficient, massive country such as ours. They think that it is dangerous to them just by means of its existence. But that's far from the truth. They are the ones threatening the whole world."
