This whole episode has reminded me to alert parents to the FACT that people homeschool for a wide variety of reasons. "Homeschooling" itself is not "a thing."
A thread. 1/
Here is a *partial* list of reasons people in America homeschool, in no particular order: 1. Child has special needs the school can't serve 2. Family has lifestyle or goals that are incompatible with school 3. Child or children have activities that are incompatible with school 2/
4. Parents want to use curriculum with religious worldview 5. Children have passions, hobbies or a job that are incompatible with school 6. Child is being bullied, or has been bullied at school 7. Child is academically gifted or behind, and school is not serving his/her needs 3/
8. Child or family member has severe illness that makes school attendance impossible 9. Parents want to avoid subjects or worldview taught in school (not just wokeness, some parents think schools aren't woke ENOUGH) 10. Parents or student wants different STYLE of education 4/
There are more. This is a PARTIAL list, but you'll notice number 9 there...Yeah, there's such a thing as Woke Homeschool (seriously, they have a website and everything), and they're not the only ones. 5/
I keep trying to tell people "school choice" is NOT a panacea if you're trying to avoid wokeness in your child's education, and there are no shortcuts to an Unwoke homeschooling education EITHER. You still have to be vigilant. 6/
The ONLY way to ensure your child is getting the education you want them to have (or they want to have) is to customize it, a la carte, and use primary sources. Any time you sign up for a "class" with other people, or a co-op, you have to do your homework, and do it ongoing. 7/
Now having said that, you can improve your chances of keeping things as you want them to be by communicating with your own children about how to evaluate ideas to separate the good and rational, from the bad and irrational. You can teach them how to think properly. 8/
And YOU should be the one to do that. No one else can, b/c no one else knows your child better than you do, and not all kids respond well to these lessons AS lessons. You may have to adapt to their personality, or interests, but YOU have to teach them how to pursue truth.9/
They'll need that skill no matter how you educate them because they will live IN the world, not on it. You can't isolate them from people who are irrational. You can't protect them from bad ideas, nor can you ensure you won't miss something even in another teacher or friend. 10/
As with all things related to parenting, you can only do what you CAN do. You can no more direct their lives than schools can, especially when your goal is to raise an autonomous, personally-responsible, thoughtful, clear-thinking INDIVIDUAL adult.11/
But ditch the myth that being able to "choose" your school or program, or homeschooling in itself, is magically "Unwoke." Oh hell no. It's not even academically better, unless you make it so!
There are no shortcuts, no easy answers. It's all hard: choose YOUR hard./END

Dear Leftist:
You can't legislate kindness, compassion, or empathy.
It's perfectly legal to "hate," and even to express "hate." I know y'all know this, you do it all the time, and want to be allowed to continue, unhindered (clearly). 1/
It's legal to be wrong, provided your wrongness doesn't literally hurt another person ("Your feelings" don't count, sorry).
It's legal to be a dick. Yup, perfectly legal to be America's biggest jackass, as long as you don't literally (please use dictionary definition) do harm 4/
You don't have a "right" to my empathy, compassion, or understanding.
You don't have a "right" to my acceptance, inclusion, or love.
In fact, I explicitly have the right NOT to give them to you; it's called "freedom of association."5/
This. Whether it's Canvas, Google Classroom, or some other online repository, you must have access to your *child's* account. Observer accounts may not show you everything! Do not settle for less. also either disallow use of other apps, or have student logins to those too. 1/
Here's a list. Some are for the teachers to use to organize their own work (Evernote), but the cutesy ones? The ones aimed at kids? DO NOT ALLOW, if they require use, push back. If you can't get around it, put on YOUR phone too with THEIR login. 2/ educationcorner.com/35-incredible-…
Do not allow your child to login to school's VPN from home. How? Well, set limits that literally turn the phone OFF to the outside world after X time of day, same with computers. Otherwise, supervise. Parental controls do not work when they're on VPN. 3/
🚨This article is everything. When people ask what I want to "abolish" it's THIS monstrosity! The govt monopoly in education, AND the "dollars" they call "education dollars." So yeah, if they're arranging payment, it's STILL govt school! 1/ realcleareducation.com/stream/?topic=…
It's NOT about lack of funding. Everyone telling you that is lying, or butt ignorant, the kind you are if you've refused to LOOK. Remember the posters saying we'd be ok when we had a bake sale to raise money for bombs? Yeah, well about that... 2/
"So why are they so powerful then? I mean if they're SO awful?" This is why. The govt (state and fed) is already the largest single employer in the nation, and the public schools and "education industrial complex," employs more than any other segment of it; they vote one way. 3/
Many people will read/watch this, and think "Oh that's wonderful! They stopped a suicide!"
I watch this video, and get a cold chill down my spine, and wonder "Why don't people see what I see? BIG BROTHER in action!"
A thread. 1/
Let's get the straw men out of the way: 1. OF COURSE I don't want kids to commit suicide OR do harm to others. Just stop. 2. OF COURSE I know there are kids who write suicide notes on their school computers and tablets. 3. OF COURSE I know kids don't tell parents everything 2/
BUT -- and it's a big one -- to support this program, you have to accept the following:
* It is right and proper for a private company, paid by the government, to surveil your children down to the WORDS they type on their devices, all the time, without you having access to 3/
🚨UPDATE with AWESOME NEWS (and possibly a lesson...). I. Was. Wrong. Contrary to my assumption (in fairness, they are accredited by WASC, and NAIS affiliated org), the program is NOT doing SEL! Their response and definition of "culture of belonging" below!1/
Now the lesson... 1. If you see code words, don't be like Deb. Don't freak out. 😏 2. If you get put off at first, don't be like Deb. Don't freak out. 3. Be persistent until you get answers, but take deep breaths. It may still be OK. 2/
NOW, to be fair to myself, I can hardly be blamed TOO terribly much for freaking out b/c they ARE accredited by an NAIS affiliate that IS woke AF. They ARE located in Utah, which is using Second Step (despite it's "red" state status). They DID use terms from the Woketionary...3/
Pro-tip: next time someone claims schools HAVE to support the secrets between teachers and minors because "kids are kicked out" of their homes for being LGBT, remember that would be a CRIME for the parents. It's called child abandonment. So I call 🐂💩findlaw.com/legalblogs/law…
And if they toss that rhetorical question at you ("Do you know how many kids are abused and thrown out for being LGBT?") tell the truth: "No, and neither do you. No one knows. There's no reliable statistic about that. It's a claim that meaty supports a narrative, ergo suspect."
What's more is, if it were true, the school's obligation would not be to preempt the crime of child abandonment with another crime (child endangerment, which is what triangulation IS), it would be to report the parents to authorities for abandonment or abuse.
