I’m personally impacted by CoA’s ridiculous ruling, as the adult child of a 🇲🇾 mother born overseas.
But let’s NEVER FORGET- this appalling sexism affects EVERY Malaysian woman! Plus intersectional impacts on poor, abused, minority, indigenous, queer, disabled, stateless women.
A country whose courts and government are in AGREEMENT to uphold gender discriminatory legislation - is a country that doesn’t care about 50% of its population AND overall national development. These are FACTS.
Clearly- this back & forth by courts RE @FamilyFrontiers wastes precious time and lives.
Malaysian Moms and overseas born children’s lives hang in the balance.
It’s past time to cut thru the BS- AMEND THE CONSTITUTION & RELATED LAWS TO ENSURE EQUAL CITIZENSHIP. ENOUGH!
Is 🇲🇾 govt waiting until ALL 🇲🇾 women with overseas born children DIE?
My mom & others passed away without ANY change.
Playing this sly waiting game WON’T prevent 🇲🇾 women from building families they choose. We’ll fight until this changes. FOR ALL 🇲🇾 WOMEN. We promise you that.
This was my childhood, teens & early 20’s- up & down JPN Shah Alam,Putrajaya with my 🇲🇾 Mom:
• getting student visa extensions then social visit passes
• processing endless paperwork while dealing w abuse, xenophobia from officers.
1/ Blaming Malaysians for diabetes, obesity without increasing wages (step 1 in affording better nutrition) is cruelly disingenuous.
I grew up w Mom counting last Rm10 in her wallet, then last Rm2- every month. We ate WHATEVER she could afford. FOOD WAS GOOD- CHEAP FOOD BETTER.
2/ I’m sure Mom wanted to make better nutritional choices, she was educated enough to know better- just couldn’t afford it on her wages.
Poverty, Food Insecurity, Poor Nutrition directly impact Health & Well-Being. Raising minimum wage is ONE way to immediately make a difference.
3/ Chronic social stress has long been associated with changes in dietary preference, food intake, weight gain & fat accrual. Plus, psychological stress is linked to visceral fat deposition i.e greater health risk thru NCD’s.
& there are few things more stressful than POVERTY.
