Today we had @SubkrishnaRao at #OurWawar who noticed all the perfect striations in the volcanic rocks cut by glaciers. And said, hey, why not Telugu style, we cook on hot flat stones?

Patthar cooking happening.

Duck egg fried on a volcanic rock over wood fire - $26 🤓 ImageImageImageImage
That extra touch of covering it to set the yolk slightly. Ah!

This might legit be the most exotic thing I've cooked though it's so simple. Duck eggs fried on volcanic Hudson valley rocks cut and pressed by glaciers, on hardwood foraged from here.
Last night I was re-reading my favorite bits of @Saeek's Pangat and was reading about how wood fire cooked bhareet is a whole other level. We've made bhareet many times before, but extra touch was stone roasted onion & tomatoes. Image
As is always the case with campfire eggplant bhareet, minimal seasoning.

Just salt, pepper, lemon, a little chili powder. That's all you need to bring out the wood fired eggplant flavor. That other spices or aromatics would suppress.

Even just salt is enough.
It was such an amazing experience having @SubkrishnaRao walk #OurWawar with us today. For the first time, it felt like we were the guests and he was the host. He is SO attuned to nature & hears & sees & observes so much. Reminded me of @abhijitkadle. That same spirit energy.

A recent phenomenon as a result of this continuous stanning of Zionism is that many new Desi arrivals who are sanghis start talking politics with American Jewish colleagues or classmates assuming they also hate Muslims. And are shocked if they get liberal pushback in both senses
For decades, well before WhatsApp, this sanghi worship of militaristic Zionism has been spread as propaganda. More Indians probably gush over the Entebbe raid than Israelis themselves.

The worst thing is, they think THIS is Jewish-Hindu solidarity. Hating Muslims together.
A big thing causing seismic waves in the Indian American community since Modism is that today, cities and universities are the biggest power centers of fascism in India. But cities and universities in the US, where Modi stans typically land, are deep blue. Even in red states.

Parents had a long chat with our building super - D. He is originally from DR and has been our building super for 33 years! It was such a cute cross cultural interaction between people who don't know too much about each other's worlds. And they all had so many TIL moments. 🧵
D asked them how many kids they had other than me. When told just one, he was surprised. Parents, in turn was surprised when D said he had 5 "direct" siblings, and 7 half siblings. He listed the different branches of his family. Including his own kids.
D asked if they lived in Delhi. They said Pune.

"Big city?"

"No, small town"

Hehe, Pune is like half of DR's population but okay, small town.

As parents departure date approaches, we are doing a repeat of some of their most favorite of the 100 or so dishes I made for them.

Today, wok fried cauliflower heavy veg noodles. Mom loves eating them like a kid, slurping the noodles. 🥰 ImageImage
पिठलं भात Image
The recipe is not really that different from any basic noodles recipe. The meta-learning I've learned over the years that make my noodles great are

1. Wok. Seasoned a decade. That's 90 % of the game.
2. Cook on max heat start to end in a high temp oil

Mom: Your tithi birthday is coming up (birthday according to the Hindu lunar calendar)

Me: Yup

Mom: Always easy to remember. Your tithi bday is Rakshabandhan

Me: Nope. Narali Pournima.

Mom: Same

Me: Not to me. Narali Pournima is a science based real thing.

Here's a 🧵
From childhood, everyone in the family knew, Gaurav's tithi birthday is on Rakhi. So every year, it would be a double celebration. My sister and cousins doing my arti, tying me Rakhi. And then my birthday also!

Mom always made coconut barfi. Cos it's also Narali Pournima.
For years, the day was Rakhi first, and the coconut thing was just a random regional holiday.

But then two things happened.

About 20 years ago, my sister & I stopped celebrating Rakhi after we realized we both found it regressive. Sis is "woke" like me. So we just gave up.

Do former colonies of Spain, France, Portugal, Netherlands also participate in sports competition to impress their colonial overlords? CWG always have a very "beta, Liz Windsor aunty ko wheels on the bus gaake sunao" feels. Commonwealth itself is a creepy concept.
Give me CdG over CWG any day
Someone wins the gold in Olympics, they are the best in the world.

Someone wins the gold in Asiad, they are the best in Asiad.

Someone wins the gold in CWG... They are best among non-USA countries that England looted.

Just a reminder that no one needs groceries in 12 minutes
Yup, this. In places where quick delivery is economically viable without resorting to predatory labor practices, it has existed for ages. In Mumbai, we used to get such random stuff delivered. But we knew those guys. They knew us. It's a real biz case.

These 10 minute delivery startups aren't non profit, are they? They want profit. Where does it come from if the prices aren't inflated? Who pays? It's the part time gig worker. And sometimes the customer. But the customer is getting pampered anyway so idgaf abt them.
