Software and the web have eaten the world.

Their lunch may have reached dessert...

a 🧵👇

"Information technology has changed the world. It started changing business a long time ago, but now even pop culture is downstream of tech.
We got memes, we got selfies, we got Soundcloud rappers, we got… The Kardashians. “IRL” has been secondary to “online” for a long time and that became official with the pandemic."
It all happened from the rise of 'the Cloud' and the iPhone's 'user friendly' mobile internet revolution. But...
"A lot of ‘eating’ has been done by software, but now only the hard limits and high-hanging fruit are remaining, things are slowing down, tech isn’t the force for change it used to be."...
"The internet and the iPhone were decades in the making and we are now rounding out the project with the plethora of SaaS companies and apps that are still being built today."
"Are any of them revolutionary? No.

Are they valuable in their own right? Yes.

Is working in tech a noble pursuit? Yes."
"When something else ‘revolutionary’ comes along it will be a deeptech, like biotech or climatetech, that we’re not au fait with today."
Gold nuggets here from exited tech entrepreneur and #deeptech " convert" @aobtweetz ❤️

Investors sell stakes in private equity and venture capital funds at a record pace.

According to the FT: Private Equity buyout funds seem to be the most affected ones, but venture capital funds follow behind: Image
I mentioned it before: in Europe, Pension funds were barely invested in VC to start with, as compared to the US. So, here are my 2 cents as a new VC fund manager:
1. If UK and European pension funds increase their exposure to local VCs, this will mostly counter-balance the move in Europe

Founders are you asking yourself the right questions before reaching out to investors?

Are you asking THEM the right questions?

👇👇👇
"Whether you are working on an investor list for your initial round of funding or have moved on to later rounds, it’s essential for the investor to be the right fit for your business."
Great work by @HubSpot and @seedlegals on explaining the important of having an investor CRM: not just with software tool to support it, but as a process starting from qualifying your investor "prospect".

"China is learning to build the world's finest propeller engine, just as its competitors enter the jet age. Admire the effort, but don't cash in your chips just yet."

Size isn't everything in semiconductor technology 👇
Taiwan's chip-makers continue to remain far ahead and both US AND Europe have NOW a chance to innovate in a field they left to Asia for far too long (with @ASMLcompany being the exception).
@ASMLcompany Incidentally, there are a bunch of interesting semiconductor startups around the UK and Europe with huge potential do disrupt the sector.

Like @rodolfor correctly put it "The race for semiconductors is the new nuclear weapons race"

Corporate Venture Capital (CVC) ─founders' friend or foe?

Would be interesting to see what the experience out there has been on getting investment from a corporation.

A 🧵👇
In my limited experience as a VC firm founder and much longer one as a tech community co-founder, I've heard of both horror stories and happy entrepreneurs who found it valuable.
For now, based on CB Insight data, what we can say for sure is that:

💸 The number of deals with CVC participation rose for an eighth consecutive quarter although the funding amount decreased from 2021

More than 100 studies citing @Google 's #AlphaFold are being released each month according to the New Scientist. The protein structures and open-source tools previously released by @DeepMind have already accelerated many areas of research.
@Google @DeepMind Interestingly, the way AlphaFold models proteins resemble the way NLP algorithms make sense of sentence structures, as you can see from the chart in the head tweet above.
@Google @DeepMind I invested in a few AI companies over the last couple of years and continue to think that it's key to continue backing infrastructure players like DeepMind was in the early 2010s.

At least one immigrant or a child born to first-generation immigrants in the founding team behind 9 out of the UK's top 10 unicorns (companies valued at $1bn or more)
"immigrants are far more likely to be entrepreneurial than people born and brought up in the UK… three times as much in fact."

But sure, let's keep on with divisive rhetoric across Europe 🤦
Just leaving it out there since far right seems set to take over my home country of Italy (that could do with a bit more unicorns than just... one) and as for the UK... I mean, since 2016 it's all been a downhill descent.
