If you want to know how powerful Pharma lobbying is, look no further than insulin.#Insulin4All
Though insulin costs 10 times more than in other countries, is needed for survival in diabetes, despite countless articles written, let’s see how many oppose capping the price to $35.
Insulin prices compared to prices of other things we use as well illustrated by @lollydaggle years ago.
Some states have acted. have introduced the oxymoronic idea of “authorized generics”. But we need a national solution.
Insulin is the Achilles heel of Pharma and PBMs. There is absolutely no justification.
The price of insulin and other prescription drugs gives you an idea into why regulations are needed to protect the public in return for the monopoly/oligopoly status prescription drugs enjoy due to patents and regulatory barriers to entry of competition.
I explained the situation in my Grand Rounds lecture 3 years ago @MayoClinic
118 of the nations leading oncologists call for Medicare negotiation of prescription drug prices— as far back as 2015! Read the petition. @MayoProceedings
As people who lead trials of new drugs we know what hurts innovation and what doesn't.
Medicare negotiation is good not only for seniors but the entire public.
We will have more truly innovative and effective drugs because Pharma will not have the easy way out that it currently does of high prices regardless of how good a drug is. 3/
1.5 million seniors pay >$2000 out of pocket for prescription drugs.
1.3 million spend >$7000. A lot are patients with cancer.
Medicare negotiation of prescription drug prices, capping price increases, and limiting out of pocket cost to max of $2000 is critical.

You cannot cap out of pocket expenses without simultaneously allowing Medicare to negotiate & capping price increases to rate of inflation.
Because then Pharma can keep increasing drug prices higher & higher knowing patients won't protest. @DavidP4AD@policydeb@ASlavitt

If you only cap out of pocket expenses but continue to allow Pharma to charge whatever they want and also increase prices at will, then all our taxes and premiums will go up. Theres no free lunch.
Without Medicare negotiation & caps on price hikes, its a giveaway to Pharma.
3/
My reach is tiny compared to the power & influence of Pharma.
Many of us are tweeting on prescription drug prices in the last few days because the US is on the verge of doing something big

If all goes well this week:
- Medicare will be able negotiate prescription drug prices starting 2026.
-Price increases of prescription drugs will be capped to inflation.
-Copay for seniors will be capped to max of $2000 per year.

For the next few days there will be an enormous amount of conflicting information.
When thinking on this issue remember all other developed countries negotiate; none have problems of price increases; or unaffordable copays.
