'At 59, I'm thrilled with the rise of mid-life influencers like, but I wish people would stop saying I look good for my age,' says Jacqueline Hooton

'As a personal trainer nearing 60, I know people mean well in their attempts to compliment me.

'But I wish they’d just say I look good… full stop.'
'As a society we’re obsessed with ageing, and particularly how people – especially women – are handling the ageing process.

'Do we look older or younger? Is what we’re wearing ‘age appropriate’? Are we age-defying, or growing old disgracefully?' Picture: Jacqueline Hooton
'I’m a mum-of-five and I’ve been a self-employed PT with my own business for over 20 years.

'Being a busy mum was what started me along my own wellness journey, because I wanted to have energy for my family.'
'Working out makes me feel strong and capable, and when I approached mid-life and the menopause, I realised there are many ways you can support yourself through those changes.'
'I’m active every day because it makes me feel good and I mix up my routines as much as possible. I love exercising outdoors walking, running or cycling.

I also enjoy strength training four-five times a week, which is so important and promotes health and function in midlife.' Picture: Jacqueline Hooton
'I started my Instagram account a couple of years ago and I felt that there was a real lack of representation of women in mid-life.'
'Now, I like to think of myself as an ‘age disrupter’ or ‘pro-age activist’ – and with over 225k followers online, I want other women to look at my videos and see there’s so much joy to look forward to as we grow older.'
'As a society there’s a lot of gendered ageism; an expectation that women over a certain age should be tucked away indoors in a twin set, but I don’t succumb to that at all.

'Around 90% of my followers are women looking for age-positive role models.'
'I think nothing of wearing in a pair of denim shorts and cowboy boots, or dancing and lip synching in my videos.

'Life should be joyful at all stages, it doesn’t stop when you turn 50 – but I’ve had my fair share of abuse along the way.'
'We don’t have to be frightened of age or desperately try to hold it at bay.'

'Kanye West's eccentricities have always defined him, but his latest attack on Pete Davidson has gone way too far,' argues @theothercoogan

🧵trib.al/EPVrnJQ
'To say that Kanye West is no stranger to controversy might be an understatement, but he may still have caused some shock with his latest Instagram post.

'The image, since deleted, depicted a photoshopped newspaper bearing the headline ‘Skete Davidson Dead At Age 28.''
'West’s post is the latest in a long line of threatening statements towards Pete Davidson — who the rapper has taken to calling ‘Skete’ for reasons that make sense only to him — since the Saturday Night Live alumnus began dating West’s ex-wife Kim Kardashian.' Picture: GC/Getty Images

'At first I barely reacted when a home DNA kit told me I was at risk of cancer, but my family history made me take action,' writes Nova Cobban

🧵 trib.al/BRovkot
'I excitedly clicked ‘post’ on Facebook and told everyone about purchasing a DNA testing kit, with the immortal headline: ‘A whole new set of insights awaits!’

'How right that was — just not in the way I expected.'
'I was hoping to find out how I could get my body back into shape by focusing on foods that were right for my genes and eliminating any that weren’t suited to me.

'It was exciting to think I would have a scientific and bespoke diet that I could follow to reach my goals.' Picture: Nova Cobban

‘’Where are you really from?’

‘Wherever I encounter this question, I know that the person asking is always trying to find out where my grandparents are from.’ Photography credit: Natalie...
‘They want to know why I’m not white, and this is a more polite way of putting it. It's an exhausting question, one that inherently invalidates your place in the world.

‘And it’s a question I used to struggle to answer.’

'Plans for Amazon's Alexa to speak with the voices of the dead will inflict more pain on those who are grieving’, says Flora Baker

‘I dialled the voicemail number again, panic rising in my throat.

‘‘Your mailbox is empty!’ the jaunty disembodied voice repeated.’
‘I’d left it too long.

‘The last voicemail my mum had accidentally left me from her hospital bed had disappeared, deleted after 30 days by my oblivious network provider.’

‘When we go to her auntie’s house, she adores playing with her dog, Rolo.

‘At the park, she’d have me push her for hours in the swing if I let her, and every night in bed, she makes me re-read Little Miss Muffet over and over, doing all of the actions each time.’

Taking my parents to their first Pride was one of the happiest days of my life’, writes @itssophieperry 🏳️‍🌈

🧵 trib.al/95BqvH6
'As the Dykes on Bikes rumbled past, my mum and dad – sporting ‘Proud LGBTQ Parents’ T-shirts – were whooping, clapping and enthusiastically waving their flags.

‘When I looked over and saw this all unfolding, I felt a unique sense of euphoria.’
‘If you had told me when I was 18 that I would take my parents to a Pride parade as an out and proud lesbian and they would wave their rainbow flags with the best of them, I never would have believed you.’ Picture: Supplied
