The concept of hero has been corrupted in Zimbabwe. Despite fighting in the liberation struggle some of the war veterans later became rogue elements who went on to harass, terrorise and kill people, making them villains and monsters not worthy of national recognition. Image
The late war veteran and Zimbabwe National Army Brigadier-General Benjamin Mabenge (Retired) who died recently was declared a national hero by government, despite his record of participating in the Gukurahundi massacres and terrorising his own Kwekwe community, a major tragedy. Image
According to declassified South African Military Intelligence documents, Mabenge was part of Zimbabwean army commanders who met apartheid South Africa generals in 1982 to discuss how to deal with Zipra and uMkhonto weSizwe (ANC armed wing) forces operating in Matabeleland region.
As the late former president Robert Mugabe prepared to massacre Zapu supporters, Mabenge met with apartheid commanders, Brigadier General Fourie, Col Van de Merwe and senior SA intelligence chiefs.
In one of the meetings, the Harare delegation reported killing "ANC dissidents". Image
Mugabe waged a war against Zapu and Zipra, and their leadership, his liberation struggle comrades, in a bid to consolidate power and impose a one-party state.
In the process, Mugabe commited genocide against Ndebeles, Joshua Nkomo's main supporters in a post-colonial Zim tragedy.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa, a key player in Gukurahundi, also met apartheid generals in a plot to crush Zapu/Zipra, and ANC/MK in the context of regional Cold War politics. While Mugabe denounced apartheid, he had strategic security operations with them for political agendas. Image
Mabenge is not the only one declared a hero with blood on his hands.
Liberation struggle fighters like Perrence Shiri were also given the same undeserved recognition and that also helped to bersmirch the hero concept in Zimbabwe. Heroes don't kill innocent civilians; cowards do. Image
Acts of heroism are different from acts of bravery. Heroism requires bravery, but acts of bravery don't necessarily amount to heroism all the time.
True heroes go beyond what is expected of them, risking life and limb to benefit others. There is an altruistic aspect to heroism.
In recent times, especially during elections from 2000, some war veterans and army commanders were deeply involved in harassing, terrorising and even killing opposition supporters.
This has left their reputations damaged and soiled despite their liberation struggle credentials.

Bulawayo police are hunting for owners of the hotly-contested Esidakeni Farm in Nyamandlovu, Matabeleland North, Zephaniah Dhlamini, Charles Moyo and Siphosami Malunga, in a vindictive bid to lay criminal charges on them in a civil matter at the behest of CIO-linked complainants. Image

While invaders claiming to have offer letters from the state have been evicted by the courts, the
ownership of the farm is yet to be determined by the High Court. Malunga and his colleagues say they bought it, while government says it acquired and gave it to some new settlers.

Former Zanu PF national political commissar and ex-Zimbabwean minister Saviour Kasukuwere says while the country commemorates heroes and defence forces days it must also pay attention to current problems affecting the majority, including unemployment, poverty and suffering. Image
"As we celebrate and remember, let’s not forget the Zimbabwean child toiling because of a lack of employment, lack of empowerment, and lack of services," says Kasukuwere who now lives in exile in Johannesburg, South Africa, after fleeing the 2017 coup (he came back briefly).
"Let us not forget the millions of Zimbabweans who have been forced to live as second-class citizens in other countries, sometimes subjected to degrading and inhuman conditions and discrimination in these foreign domiciles.

Kenyans voted in general elections today in largely peaceful polls marred by logistical delays in some parts of the country with about 54 million people.
Presidential candidates, Deputy President William Ruto (L) and veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga (R) both voted early. Image
For the first time in the history of multi-party democracy in Kenya, all candidates have undertaken that they will accept the outcome of the elections.
A dispute over election results in 2007 led to weeks of violence and brutality, leading to the deaths of an estimated 1 200 people and forced displacement of about 600 000 people who fled from their homes.

In a bid to understand Australian-based Susan Mutami's behaviour against the backdrop of her recent sensational allegations of rape by President Emmerson Mnangagwa, The NewsHawks sampled some medical, clinical and psychology journals on how victims and survivors of abuse behave.
Research papers and journals on rape, and victims of abuse and survivors shed light on Mutami’s behaviour as a child and later adult after the sexual assault ordeal allegedly perpetrated and inflicted by Mnangagwa.
A journal article by Amercican Professor Matthew Tull, who works in the Department of Psychology at the University of Toledo, Ohio, United States, titled "Understanding Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder”, gives useful insight into the behaviour of victims and survivors of rape.

Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa's moral authority and legitimacy have been undermined by his sex scandal, while Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga's reputation has been damaged by his brutal divorce saga.
Ex-vice-president Kembo Mohadi quit last year over a sex infamy. Image
There are many instances in which leaders’ dishonesty, crookedness corruption, or immorality are at the centre of the public agenda and debate. This is what's happening now in Zimbabwe following allegations of rape against Mnangagwa which have badly damaged his reputation.
This comes when Mohadi was last year forced to resign following revelations that he was sleeping with several ladies, some of them married, and one his subordinate.
Mohadi was put under immense pressure and eventually he had to resign in shame with his image badly battered.
