To add something to this thread - last night I had dinner with an officer in the Ukrainian military. We were talking about the Russian (and Ukrainian) use of unguided aerial rockets. Particularly - the trend of "lobbing" these rockets from long distance we've seen recently... 1/6
Videos of this tactic - from both sides - caused a lot of Western commentators to laugh at the Ukrainians and Russians - calling it "useless", "pointless" a "waste of ordnance". But my Ukrainian friend, who'd been on the receiving end of such a barrage had a different view. 2/6
A Russian attack helicopter firing a barrage of rockets in such a way can effectively saturate a village sized target with fire - while it's impossible to put an individual rocket directly on a specific target they fire so many rockets in a salvo it's still effective. 3/6
Apparently a verified Russian embassy account talking about prisoners of war - legally protected under the Geneva Conventions - being subjected to "execution" and a "humiliating death" is not against Twitter's rules.
As a number of people have pointed out, this is essentially the Russian government justifying their murder of over 50 Ukrainian prisoners of war earlier today.
Whilst still technically denying it, they're now simultaneously trying to claim the prisoners deserved their fate.
"We didn't do it but even if we did, those bastards deserved it".
This is a very common pattern in Russian propaganda.
β’ A video is published online of a Russian soldier castrating a live Ukrainian prisoner.
β’ Russia launches a cluster munition attack on Ukrainian civilians queuing for a bus.
β’ Russia in all likelihood murdered 40 Ukrainian POWs and tried to blame Ukraine.
If you're outraged by these Russian crimes against humanity lobby your elected representatives for more lethal military aid for Ukraine.
It is literally the ONLY thing that will stop these Russian atrocities from continuing.
Happy to give context/details to any foreign journalists that might want to cover the various stories of Russian crimes against humanity outlined above. DMs are open.
A screenshot from Dominic Cummings' private Substack, where he advocates forcing Ukraine to cede territory "in the south/east" and advocates no further NATO expansion, ever.
Tory members should know if this man has any involvement in the leadership campaign of any candidate.
And for context, there is no "supporting Ukraine in seeking a peace deal". There is no way any Ukrainian government would survive ceding large parts of Ukraine to the genocidal Russian invasion. It would immediately fall.
More from Cumming's blog.
Note the direct regurgitation of Russian propaganda lines, "fighting to the last Ukrainian" and the claim that "Biden and Johnson are trying to prolong the war".
To be clear; Ukraine would be fighting with or without Western aid.
I see a lot of people confidently predicting the Russian army will "adapt" to the presence of HIMARS on the battlefield without a) explaining how or b) explaining that any conceived adaptation will inevitably have a detrimental effect on Russian military effectiveness.
Most of this adaptation I've seen people suggest consists of either a) basing supply depots outside of HIMARS range or b) having dispersed supply dumps inside HIMARS range.
But both solutions significantly complicate and add strain to Russia's already creaking logistics.
The Russian logistics model is based around pushing up huge amounts of war materiel via train, and then using trucks to distribute them the final few miles to the combat units that need them - as this excellent article from WarOnTheRocks explains...
