I may end up on the #WCPSS Board with you, so this is a conversation that will need to happen. I don't know anyone who doesn't want teachers to be paid more. The question is how it will get done. Typical of one side is the argument: just pay them more...
But how?
Currently the WCPSS budget allots almost 90% to salary and benefits. 58% of the NC State budget goes to education. So, where does the money from and how is it used to increase teacher pay? There are arguments for/against merit pay and for/against longevity pay...
Both need to be part of the discussion. It's not fair to punish a teacher financially for a class that may perform poorly on tests, for reasons beyond her/his control. Likewise, it's unfair to reward a substandard teacher simply because they've been on the job for X # of years...
I've looked at your website and I see a lot of spending proposals: solar panels, more counselors to replace SROs, etc...How do you plan to pay for it? Increase taxes? More bonds on the ballot? If that's the case, just say so. You'll fit right in with the current WCPSS Board...
I'd like to look at where we are wasting money and can make cuts. Where we can free up funds to benefit students and increase teacher pay, fairly and responsibly. We can start with redistributing the Office of Equity Affairs $$$...almost $10 million to date with nothing to show
The future of #WCPSS will require real leadership and being able to make tough calls, not just platitudes to interest groups. I fully intend to upset folks of all political persuasions when I'm on the Board, because my sole aim is to improve academic opportunities for kids...
Real leadership is taking #ExtremeOwnership and making tough calls and being accountable for your decisions. That is something sorely lacking with this current Board.
