This isn't the lost city of Atlantis, but it's pretty close! Let's go on a dive through history with LX News Host @tabithalipkin, and learn more about how the environment sunk what was once known as the "Las Vegas" of ancient Rome. (THREAD) on.LX.com/ujubS9T
Due to a nearby volcano (Sulfatara) this area near Naples, Italy, known as "Baia", sunk over hundreds of years and now lies in about 15 feet of water. But it was thriving about 2,000 years ago!
This mosaic was a significant find for historians, as it is the only mosaic in the area known to depict humans.

All the artifacts on the site were left behind by the ancient people on purpose. Because statues, marble, and tiles were quite common back then. This mosaic is believed to have been in a dining area.
For each dive, the mosaics are uncovered and covered in sand. This keeps algae from growing on the tiles.

These statues are replicas of the real ones found when the site was discovered in 1956. They are housed at a nearby museum and are believed to belong to Emperor Claudio. Excavations started in the 80s and in 2002 it finally became an official archaeological park! @TabithaLipkin

.@TabithaLipkin had quite the adventure just getting to the Baia Archeological Park. She had to catch two trains and a public bus starting at 5am to get to the dive site because it was so far from where she was staying.
Here are some behind-the-scenes videos of when @TabithaLipkin arrived and started her dive into Baia Archaeological Park.
Once the dive was over, @TabithaLipkin's dive masters gave her a ride back to Naples to catch a train to Rome (where I was staying), but he said she couldn't get on the train without trying the famous Naples pizza. So they did. And @TabithaLipkin says it was AMAZING!
