"President Jokowi sees the importance of making hard decisions on foreign policy, furthering Indonesia on the international stage," Jusuf Wanandi, Centre for Strategic and International Studies Board of Trustees Vice Chair, said.
Indonesian International Islamic University's school of political science dean @pjvermonte said he did not believe it was going to be healthy for democracy if Jokowi continued the "king-maker" tradition of previous presidents. #livecoverageTJP#77IndonesiaIndependenceDay
"ASEAN is not functioning and we can't leave it as it is. Supposedly, we're the leader, Indonesia, and we cannot just escape issues in the region," Jusuf said.
"For the past few years, the President's choice of wardrobe has deviated away from the usual traditional attire from major cultures. I think it's very refreshing to see Jokowi wearing traditional attires from other local cultures," @pjvermonte said.

President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo is now delivering his speech. As in previous years, he is wearing a traditional costume from an Indonesian region. This time he is wearing Paksian attire from Bangka Belitung.
"The challenges we face today are very challenging [...] Nevertheless, amid the tough challenges, we must be grateful that Indonesia is one of the nations that have overcome the global crisis," Jokowi said in his presidential state address.
"Indonesia’s economic fundamentals remain strong, in the midst of global economic turbulence. On the one
hand, we must remain vigilant and careful. On the other hand, we must continue with the nation’s big agendas to achieve an Advanced Indonesia," Jokowi said.
"Indonesia’s second capital is abundant natural resources. A vast area with the greatest biodiversity in the world is indeed a huge potential for Indonesia if we can manage it in wise and sustainable manners,"
"Our third capital is demographic bonus. Our large population dominated by young, productive age and rising people’s purchasing power will be the driving force that stimulates national economy in facing global
competition,"
"The fourth capital is international trust which is increasing exponentially. Russia and Ukraine have welcomed Indonesia as the bridge for peace. We
are acknowledged by major countries amid rising geopolitical heat,"
"Thirdly, legal, social, political, and economic protections for society must be continuously bolstered. The realization of civil rights and democratic practice, women’s political and marginalized community rights must be guaranteed,"
"Corruption eradication remains the top
priority [...] Major corruption cases, such as Jiwasraya, the Indonesian Armed Forces Social Insurance (ASABRI) and Garuda Indonesia have successfully been revealed,"
"The Government keeps paying serious attention to the settlement of the past gross human rights violations. Bill on the Truth and Reconciliation Commission is under discussion,"
"MSMEs must be continuously supported to level up. We continue to boost economic digitation which has led to the development of two decacorns and nine unicorns in order to empower MSMEs,"
"The construction of National Capital of
Nusantara (IKN) must not stall. The IKN is not only for state civil apparatus, but also a city of innovators and entrepreneurs,"
"All the aforementioned agenda must be supported by excellent Indonesian people. Therefore, in the health sector, stunting rate must be immediately reduced,"
"Access for school age children to quality education services must be prioritized. Students and university students must be introduced to work environment at an early age,"
"Noble values, Pancasila (the Five Principles, the Indonesian State Ideology), Bhinneka Tunggal Ika (unity in diversity), and patriotism are the main pillars,"
"I would like to remind everyone to avoid identity politics, to avoid religious politics, and to avoid social polarization. Our democracy must be more mature and the national consolidation must be strengthened,"
"I reiterate that we must always remain vigilant, cautious, and alert. Crisis after crisis still haunts the world. World geopolitics threatens regional security,"
"I call on all components of the nation to unite, to support the big agenda for the achievement of Advanced Indonesia with commitment and hard work, with innovation and creativity,"
"Let us unite for an Advanced Indonesia. Indonesia recovers faster, rises stronger. Long Live the Republic of Indonesia! Long Live the Land of Pancasila!"
"In preparation for the G20, the president needs to be a lot more in the international area. The international situation is getting worse. The conflicting tendencies in the world may hinder our achievements and capabilities," Jusuf said.
"Only through ASEAN can we exert our influence. Slowly but surely, we will be facing more obstacles, like Taiwan for example."
"This is an effort that Indonesia not only has the right to participate in, but also to play a bigger role in. ASEAN is an instrument to get to that level. It is an important effort to be able to develop."
"When it comes to human rights violations in Indonesia [...] our friends at NGOs and agencies are waiting to see what the President will do with his decree," @pjvermonte said. #livecoverageTJP
"He mentioned the process of having a bill on the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. This is also very important because we've had huge black spots in the history of human rights violations," he added. #livecoverageTJP
"One critical issue I want to see being picked up is Papua, because it has not only political [importance] but also a domestic and economic impact," Jusuf said.
Indonesia is currently in the throes of its most severe outbreak of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic.
From the government’s (erstwhile) insistence on prioritizing the economy, to overwhelmed doctors and overflowing hospitals, the realities of mitigating the “second wave” of infections are heartbreaking.
Here is a collection of articles, op-eds and editorial pieces that portray the dire situation of the past week:
