I was just thinking abt trying to keep hydrated yday & remembering how my last job was in a cleanroom so we couldn’t have food/drinks & many experiments were run solo & couldn’t be paused safely to go out for hrs which meant no food/water/bathroom & now I’m 😡 that this is norm
The only concession to health & safety was having a 12 hr time limit to be in the lab mostly bc when you’re that tired you make mistakes that can be v bad for v $$ & hard to replace equipment. Note that that wasn’t total time worked just in lab limit.
I def understand how difficult it is to write experiment procedures that can be paused bc I wrote procedures myself but the actual issue is staffing. Focusing on running solo shifts for efficiency means ppl can be stuck alone for hrs.
& while official instructions may be to pause experiment if you need to go to the bathroom, in practice you’re still on the hook to finish your test. Bigger issue on evening/night shifts where you’d have to call security to come watch the setup if you had to leave.
OTOH I’m glad I got a chance to work on a hands on testing project for a mission I’ll always cherish working on & OTOH I’m 🤬🤬 that’s it’s so inaccessible for many others & def inaccessible to me now as well. No way I can go many hrs w/o sipping water again.
Anyway I’m having a day w feels abt inaccessible workplaces esp being #DisabledInSTEM
Some day I’m gonna write my big article abt how contractors are esp mistreated in some of these labs. Regular employees have access to certain health & safety protections that contractors don’t.

As long as nondisabled ppl get to dictate what’s “reasonable” in “reasonable accommodations” we won’t have justice in how disability accommodations are provided
Separate rant on why accommodations based accessibility is a scam forthcoming
Since so many ppl are interacting w this just a nite that I just posted this to vent after a frustrating exp this morning.
But it’s not an original thought. Various words have been used to say the same thing by many disability justice advocates
An in person appt popped up bc cancellation for doc I’ve been waiting for
Mom (on my behalf): can you make it a telehealth appt as a disability accommodation?
Them: doc hasn’t been providing accommodations
Me: 🤦🏽♀️
Medical scheduling staff seem to have abs 0 training in ADA & disability accommodations
They have the infrastructure to provide telehealth at abt time. Scheduling policies that preclude telehealth appts at certain times even as accommodations are discriminatory.
I’m also 100% certain based on past exp that contacting my state’s disability rights org abt this will do absolutely nothing. They seem to have odd narrow focuses on what they even consider reasonable or needed accommodations.
Hey so to state the obvious most of the advice on healing from trauma is focused on trauma that is in the past.
It does not applying to ongoing trauma like medical trauma for chronically ill ppl. There’s v v little I’ve found for continuous trauma situations.
Also most of the discussion by medical ppl of medical trauma is abt things like invasive medical procedures. Basically none of it is abt their mistreatment of patients via medical gaslighting.
The medical system is completely unequipped for the level of introspection needed to recognize they’re the source of continuous trauma & it’s hypervigilance is an appropriate response by patients.
I’m watching a documentary on Hummingbirds & I feel like they need to be new chronic illness mascot bc apparently their entire life is a careful dance of managing energy expenditure & replenishment aka pacing.
God/dess how am I supposed to handle the stress of being sick while also having to worry abt the ppl who are supposed to help me not being COVID safe & possibly making me sicker. I’m so damn tired of the murderous medical system in the US. Shame on HCPs who go along w this too.
So many of you assholes willing to put patients’ lives in danger bc of inconvenience to you.
Every single one of my doctors offices is using surgical masks only & many docs do telehealth + in office appts & take masks off for telehealth. It’s been 2.5 yrs. It’s abs on you to have learned abt aerosol spread & take precautions despite the CDC’s lies.
