It would be fine to have a male@person in this role if we had addressed the health issues which surround menstruation. Women usually suffer for about a decade before being diagnosed with endometriosis and then there is a bit of a “nae luck” outcome as the treatment is not great
So, it’s quite hard to accept that my government, who say they want to establish Scotland as global leaders in womens health, have appointed a male person who has no background in womens health or womens issues to sort out the taboos and stigma which surround our female functions
I’m sure this chap is enthusiastic about his role, but it is going to take more than a red polo shirt to get women to engage in talking about menstruation. Especially women of faith, women who want privacy and women who are rolling their eyes so hard they now have a headache.
Forgot the hashtags because my simple lady brain was too addled by progesterone. I am hormental with menopause. If only there was a government funded vehicle to teach me about that. Or a smiley man to talk to me about stuff he has no “lived experience”of #menstruationofficer
“Dignity” is annoying me too. Dignity is something women generate for themselves when we have autonomy. That means having education and that means engagement which requires empathy and no man will ever understand the taboos within the taboos because we hide them so brilliantly.
Never cleaned a clot induced blood bath up from a work toilet? Never fashioned an emergency pad out of a sock? Never wedged a used pad in an overflowing bin in a public loo without touching anything? Never felt the dread of getting, or not getting, your period? Then bog off.
We need proper investment into womens health. This role, let alone the appointment of a man is insulting. Which is what I have come to expect for women from my government. Women die, suffer or struggle because we do not have health services or education to meet our needs.
I may be projecting a bit. I am so fed up of being given crumbs and told off for not being grateful. I am getting all manner if hassle #EdFringe2022 for having the wrong opinions and being the wrong sort of woman. What is GORGEOUS is the support from women. #WomenWontWeesht
