I agree with @mrjamesob.

The UK is fundamentally unprepared for the threats we face, because our Government has failed us.

🧵Thread: Emergency Preparedness in the UK...
1/ This week Britain faces flood warnings with potential risk to life, following a drought, with hose pipe bans in place next week.

Major water companies have admitted huge leaks, whilst delivering big profits to shareholders.

2/ The Government has not announced any immediate plans in preparation for these threats to life, nor action on water company failures.

They hadn’t prepared for wildfires this summer, either.

3/ This is Britain today.

Drought, fires and floods.

Wages plummeting. Inflation soaring.

Daily essentials have become unaffordable to families.

Energy bills are due to sky rocket in months whilst companies reap record profits.
4/ So, where is our Government?

Where is the leadership, the prior planning, the whole-systems approach?

Where's the emergency preparedness plan?

Where's a financial strategy to reasonably tax massive corporate profits, to help shield ordinary people?
6/ So Boris Johnson has already scarpered.

And Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss are too scared of losing the Conservative leadership race to show any real leadership.
7/ The public are not blind to this, nor the litany of government failures to step up, to plan and to protect us.

Having lived through Covid-19, we rightly demand that Government anticipates threats to national safety and prepares before it is too late.
8/ Part of protecting Britain is taking immediate action:

1) Taking decisive economic action to tackle inflation
2) Releasing emergency preparedness plans
3) Bolstering our defences
4) Developing whole-system approaches to imminent disasters
9/ I was pleased to see yesterday that the Government will adopt some of the resilience plans Labour has been talking about for months.

But announcing flood alerts systems that will not be ready until *autumn* - when we have critical flood alerts in place *today* - sums it up.
10/ We cannot afford to be led by a Conservative Government who fail to plan, then copy the Labour Party's homework when they realise they've left it too late.

Emergency preparedness, surprisingly enough, involves *actually preparing*.
11/ We cannot trust a Conservative government to rise to the huge challenges our country faces.

They do not have a grip on our economy.
They do not have a grip on emergency planning.
They do not have a grip on the climate crisis.
12/ As I have said time and again:

We need a Government that will take serious action on the climate crisis, to adapt our infrastructure and prepare a joined-up emergency response to keep people safe against the threats of a warming world.
13/ It doesn't have to be like this.

The Labour Party has a plan for our country.
14/ We know how we'd secure Britain's defences, both short and long term.

You can read my piece in the @HuffPost talking about what the Labour Party would do to bolster Britain's resilience here: huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/britain-…
15/ We know how we would tackle the cost of living crisis.

With a windfall tax on huge corporate profits.

Families wouldn't pay a penny more for their heating this winter than they currently do.

You can sign the petition to support our plan here: action.labour.org.uk/page/111419/pe…
16/ We know how we would secure the future of our country.

With a long-term plan to tackle the climate crisis that is costed, ambitious and will protect all households in Britain.
17/ Since I was elected, I have been relentlessly challenging the Government to plan, prepare and protect us.

18/ The Government shows no sign of changing.

So, a change of Government is in order.

The Labour Party is ready and waiting.
