Thread: The @hopenothate campaign to reduce the harm caused by the misogynist influencer Andrew Tate has been really successful. He's already been removed by Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. But why did we feel he was dangerous enough to warrant deplatforming? (1)
We don't call for the deplatforming of figures lightly. We understand that social media is an important space for debate and disagreement. We only call for it when we think it's really important or a user, such as Andrew Tate, poses a serious danger. (2)
Tate is probably the most famous internet celebrity in the world right now. In recent weeks he has been Googled more often than the President of America, Donald Trump and major pop stars. As of this week, the #AndrewTate hashtag has over 12.7 billion views on TikTok. (3)
The major concern is that his brand of extreme and sometimes violent misogyny is reaching a young male audience and could have a really corrosive effect. His content is widely celebrated by his fans for having brought back “traditional masculinity”. (4)
However, what is less reported is his long history of extremism, including racism and homophobia and his close association with major far-right figures, most notably the anti-Muslim extremist Stephen Lennon [aka Tommy Robinson]. (5)
We know that misogyny can be a gateway to other extreme and discriminatory views, and there is a serious danger that some people, sucked in by his sexist content, will align with his wider far-right politics. See some evidence here: hopenothate.org.uk/2021/09/26/ant… (6)
For those who think this is "an attack on free speech", I've written at length about why deplatforming, when used sparingly, could actually have the opposite effect and increase the diversity of voices online. (7)

For all the detailed evidence of the dangerous things Tate has said and done have a look at the full briefing we have put together and sent to all the major Tech Platforms. (8)

It's great news that Facebook, Instagram and Twitter have already acted but be sure to sign our petition calling on @tiktok_uk and @YouTube to act as well!

The local elections are fast approaching. This year Britain First have decided to focus all their efforts on just three seats: Rhondda Cynon Taff, Salford and Greenwich. Despite only needing to find 3 people they've managed to pick some very extreme candidates. Have a look: (1)
Standing in Rhondda Cynon Taff (Bryanna and Llanharan ward) is Carl Burgess. He has repeatedly recommended a notorious, highly antisemitic Holocaust denial documentary on social media. In April 2020, wrote: “Jews wanna take over the world I watched a documentary”. (2)
Burgess also posted a clip from American History X in which Nazi skinheads embark on an appalling racist rampage in a grocery store. Burgess wrote: “I’m no nazi but I’m sure a few of us can relate. [...] Instead if blacks its muslims over here who are a major problem" (3)

Thread: So Stephen Lennon (aka Tommy Robinson) made a video this week saying @hopenothate can't keep going after his assets as he is no longer bankrupt and so no longer has any debts. Let me explain why he is wrong (1)
When you go bankrupt the debts you owe and the assets you own form what is known as the Bankruptcy Estate. The trustees job is to then distribute the assets to pay the creditors who are owed. (2)
However, after 12 months, the bankruptcy comes to an end and whatever debts could still not be paid by assets (there wasn’t enough assets to pay debts) are written off. This is what Lennon is talking about when he says he no longer owes any money. (3)

Thread: The interview with Universities Minister Michelle Donelan on @BBCRadio4 where she essentially argues we must "protect and promote" the free speech of Holocaust deniers shows up the fundamental issue with the governments new so-called free-speech bill. (1)
This current debate has no relationship to the quality/value of the speech they demand should be heard, when and where they demand. The gov wrongly assume that diversity of opinion always leads to attainment of truth, and that the correct argument will always win if debated. (2)
It would be wonderful if true but this optimism ignores the possibility that ill-informed opinions or outright lies like Holocaust denial and race science, will flood the debate and that ‘he who shouts the loudest’ (and it will be a 'he') will end up drowning out others. (3)

This year @hopenothate has been one of the hardest I can remember with 3 elections and more far-right terrorist attacks than previously. Despite this our research team has produced some of the best work available on the contemporary far right. Here are our highlights: (1)
Our major report this year was From Banners to Bullets: The International Identitarian Movement. Co-authored by @SimonMurdochHNH and with an infiltration by @_BvdM it looked at 23 countries around the world. hopenothate.org.uk/wp-content/upl… (2)
We produced a small update to our 2017 Alt-Right report with an article explaining what has happened to the movement since Charlottesville hopenothate.org.uk/wp-content/upl… (3)
