Here's a thread explaining some of Frye's South Asian vocal and design inspirations ! i will also be talking about the big forehead thing, so stay tuned! 🧵1/? Image
Let's look at Deep Cut's music first! Frye's singing in Anarchy Rainbow uses Gamakas, a technic used when singing Carnatic music, a type of singing from Southern India which utilizes variation of the pitch of a note, oscillating, or "gliding" between notes
Additionally, the sound of anarchy rainbow/now or never has elements of traditional Japanese, Indian folk, and Brazilian music! The Indian elements are especially prominent during Frye's parts, and i can definitely hear some traditional instruments, specifically+
+Some type of drums (perhaps a dholak?) and some kind of horn (which I'm gonna assume is a Nadaswaram)
im not that familar with Indian instruments so if someone is, please let me know!
this is further seen in now or never, @ Frye's part at 0:21, you can hear a sitar/veena!
Frye's footwork is very reminiscent of traditional indian dance, specfically Odissi and Bharatanatyam!
Here's an example of Odissi!
Now let's look @ Frye's design! Frye wears clothes that have South Asian influence written all over! she wears a top exposing her belly, covered with what looks kind of like a translucent dupatta/chunni! this is seen a lot in traditional Indian clothing, which expose the stomach+
+and are usually worn with a chunni. A lot of these are more modern and have some western influence Here are sone examples! ImageImageImage
her pants look like Patiala pants! this type of pant is often worn by dancers and often paired with a kameez, a type of traditional Indian dress commonly worn in Punjab. The holes in her pants could be a spin on a split leg design! ImageImageImage
The headpiece Frye wears looks like mango chutney (mangos are the national fruit of India), or it could be some kind of fish fry/curry! where I'm from, fish isn't commonly eaten so its not familiar to me, but anyone who does let me know if Frye's headpiece looks familiar! ImageImage
now onto the thing that is causing all the controversy, her forehead. lemme preface this by saying South Asia is full of diverse and varying cultures; what could be considered true in one place might not apply to another area/culture! that being said, as a SOUTH INDIAN+
+My culture says that big foreheads are symbols of good fortune and wisdom! i verified this by talking to my elders and reading a few sources actually written by south asian ppl! This belief is older and modern day beauty standards/western influence have change this but+
This holds true for many people! I get that some South Asian ppl are saying this isn't true, but be aware that you may come from a place that believes something different, or you just don't know enough about this topic!
But the positive meanings behind Frye's forehead aren't some kind of excuse or defense. Frye is a wonderful example of diverse character design. Not everyone is a stereotypically hot Caucasian busty fantasy babe. Ppl with varying features exist, and I'm glad Frye reflects this
Her design is unique and creative, and it breaks my heart that some ppl are being genuinely malicious about her. Crazy cause some of yall/#that youtuber are hating on the one member who has strong South Asian influence+dark skin. just letting yall know the bigotry is showing 😒
Anywayssss, please show some love to Frye, and if you haven't already, please pre-order the Splatoon 3 Splatfest World Premiere! It's free and you can play online w/o a online subscription! I'd love for more ppl to discover how amazing Splatoon is! catch ya later 💜💛🦑🐙 Image
