This isn’t the first time that Barre Seid, the mega-donor who just handed Leonard Leo and the far-right more than $1 billion in dark money artillery, has used his fortune to push a far-right agenda behind the scenes. THREAD:
In 2016, George Mason University received $10 million from the Charles Koch Foundation - plus another $20 million from an anonymous donor – to rename its law school after the ultra-conservative late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia.

GMU admitted that their “anonymous donor” arranged this donation after approaching none other than Leonard Leo.
washingtonpost.com/news/grade-poi…
But that wasn’t the whole story. Students, faculty, & alumni were rightfully concerned about giving far-right billionaires control over their university. They pressed GMU for answers about what strings were attached to these donations and who exactly this mystery donor was.
In response to public information requests, GMU was eventually forced to reveal some of the behind-the-scenes communications about these donations.
It turns out that the Kochs, Leo, and Leo’s “anonymous donor” wanted a lot more than a name change - they sought to influence faculty hiring and get the university to pump money into right-wing projects. It doesn’t end there.
truthout.org/articles/right…
GMU still hadn’t revealed who the $20 million “anonymous donor” was. Instead, it’d only turned over some emails and documents involving this “anonymous donor,” with their name redacted. However, there were clues that pointed to one man: Barre Seid.
Sure enough, when GMU responded to a request for all communications with “Barre Seid,” it included some of the same emails – only this time with Seid’s name where the donor’s name had previously been redacted.
GMU isn’t the only place where Seid bankrolls far-right causes.
He also funds infamous dark money groups like the Cato Institute, the Competitive Enterprise institute, and the Heartland Institute, and has funneled millions through the Koch’s “dark money ATM,” Donors Trust.

These are the tactics creepy billionaires use to secretly manipulate the public square and shape American life. Enough is enough.

PSA: The Biden administration has created new opportunities for student loan relief. Here’s what Americans can expect:
Federal student loan holders – including grad PLUS & Parent PLUS borrowers - who make less than $125k, or $250k for families (based on your 2020 or 2021 income), can get up to $10k forgiven. If the Dept of Ed already has your income on file, you’ll get relief automatically.
That debt forgiveness doubles to $20K if you’ve ever received a Pell Grant.

Monthly payments have been suspended through December 31, 2022, extending the pandemic pause on student loan payments and interest accrual.

Right-wing donors used more than $580 million in dark money to pack the Supreme Court with Republican justices and demolish legal precedent. That effort was masterminded by Leonard Leo – the same guy who’s been given $1.6 BILLION by a single donor to use as he sees fit.
We already have an idea of how this dark money will be weaponized. Leo’s dark-money web funds voter suppression and disinformation, bogus arguments about “critical race theory,” and attacks on President Biden’s nominees. Expect to see a whole lot more of that now.
Of course dark money also gives Mitch McConnell his political artillery to run smear ads against Democratic Senate candidates.

Congratulations to CREW for at last prevailing in this case, seeking access to the DOJ/OLC memo advising AG Barr’s public commentary on the Mueller Report. s3.documentcloud.org/documents/2215…
The Mueller Report laid out Russia’s persistent interference for Trump in the presidential election and the facts of Trump’s obstruction of justice efforts (remember that, through all the Trump scandal fatigue?).
I filed my amicus brief because the FOIA exemption by which the Department sought to keep the memo secret would have swallowed the rule – to be “pre-decisional,” it must relate to a defined agency decision;

This grim news is why the climate provisions of our reconciliation bill (thanks for no help at all, Republicans) are only Chapter One. washingtonpost.com/climate-enviro…
Chapter Two is vigorous executive action by the administration, not seen to date.
Chapter Three is market correction, to take away fossil’s $600B annual subsidy in U.S. from not paying for pollution costs. Carbon pollution fee does this readily.

The inventory of materials taken from Mar-a-lago seems to confirm my thesis that requests for materials were not adequately met, so subpoena was issued to give requests more teeth, and when evidence of further noncompliance arose, FBI went to search warrant…
…having exhausted other avenues.
We will know more when FBI application and affidavit become public. Keeping them private is for benefit of individuals’ reputations (they can be loaded up with derogatory information), witnesses’ safety and investigation’s integrity.

What will be “unsealed” is the warrant itself and the receipt/return of service listing items seized, documents Trump had. What will not be unsealed yet is the application and affidavit presented to the court to explain and justify the search.
That disclosure may come later, if Trump litigates the search, or to the defendant if/when someone is charged with an offense in this matter.
Federal search warrant applications and affidavits are ordinarily not made public (a) to protect reputations of uncharged persons and (b) to protect witnesses and integrity of investigation.
