Good afternoon. I'm at the proceedings of the Mass Casualty Commission; today, Halifax Police Chief Dan Kinsella will testify. You can avoid this coverage by muting the hashtag #MCC
ICYMI, based on her (uninformed) testimony before the #MCC, this morning I called for Brenda Lucki to be removed as Commissioner of the RCMP: halifaxexaminer.ca/featured/the-v…
#MCC lawyer Rachel Young: did the HRPD do everything the RCMP ask of it?
Kinsella: Yes
Young: if the killer had entered HRM, would you have asked the EMO to issue an Emergency Alert?
Kinsella: the answer is complicated... #MCC
Kinsella: "the real time to have considered that alert would have been much earlier." Had he gotten into HRM, we would have considered it.
Young: you knew about it?
Kinsella: Yes #MCC
Notably, Kinsella dis not sit down for an in-person interview with #MCC staff, but rather responded to questions in writing, once and then in response to follow-up questions
*did* not, rather
Young is asking about post-event supports giving to HRPD employees. While this is necessary, certainly those employees didn't experience anything like the trauma experienced by victim families or RCMP staff #MCC
There aren't a lot of people here today. Just 3 reporters (who I see in the room), and only a tiny number of family members. Some new lawyers, tho. #MCC
Young asks Kinsella about relationships between police agencies. Here's what he said in his written response #MCC
Young: everyone says cops on the streets get along fine, but as you go up the chain of command, it gets strained.
Kinsella: front line people just want to help people. #MCC
There's a long discussion about the RCMP being kicked out of the Nova Scotia Chiefs of Police Association (Kinsella says they weren't kicked out, but they were). #MCC
Kinsella says the RCMP left. I dunno, really, it's a tiny detail I haven't followed #MCC
Young: if the RCMP asks, can the HRPD ERT respond?
Kinsella: yes #MCC
This testimony seems not very interesting or important. There is a better use of my time, so I'll leave this and attend to that better use. If something noteworthy happens, I'll return to it later.

The degradation of data: We've lost:
• contagions sites
• demographic info (health zone, age) and vaccination status of new cases
• positivity rate of PCR testing
• full access to PRC testing

I've been out on personal business all day. Some things happened in my absence...
First, Nova Scotia Health issued the current COVID hospitalization status:
• in hospital for COVID-19: 49 (8 of whom are in ICU)
• in hospital for something else but have COVID-19: 138
• in hospital who contracted COVID-19 after admission to hospital: 110
The above figures do not include any (if any) children hospitalized at the IWK.
Nova Scotia is reporting 8 new deaths from COVID, for the latest reporting period, August 16-22 /thread
This graph shows the weekly reported death count since January. Note that due to a change in the reporting period, the week ending April 11 has just 6 days.
I don't yet demographic (age) or vaccination status of the newly deceased, as those data will not be released until Sept. 15.
Good morning. I'm at today's proceedings of the Mass Casualty Commission. Brenda Lucki is continuing her testimony. You can avoid this thread by muting the hashtag #MCC
My takeaway from yesterday's testimony: It became apparent to me that Lucki rose to her position because she masterfully uses the lingo and distracting babble of bureaucracy to navigate through difficult waters without being drowned by the reality of, well, fact. #MCC
Lucki talks fast and broadly, owning success and placing the blame for failure on a stagnant institution — what are you going to do? #MCC
Good morning. I'm at the today's proceedings of the Mass Casualty Commission. This morning, Lee Bergerman is being asked a few final questions by the commissioners, and after a break, Brenda Lucki will begin testifying. #MCC
I'm purposefully late this morning, because I found yesterday's testimony from Bergerman underwhelming. As I wrote for this morning's Morning File (not yet published)... #MCC
Bergerman's testimony wasn't hugely revealing. At one point she said she had not been following the proceedings of the commission because she was out of the country with spotty internet.... #MCC
