Can you advance your career without becoming a manager? πŸ€”

"What a mistake! 🀯

People increasingly realize that they can choose to be an Individual Contributor (IC), an expert in their area, instead of managing people.

See how you can get there by following the steps below!πŸ‘‡
An IC is a developer with a lot of experience and prefers coding instead of managing a team.

These are the primary roles of these two career paths.

Don't default to becoming an IC - make a choice. πŸ”€

It would help if you were genuinely passionate about tech to be successful in this field. You'll be spending most of your time coding, so you must be willing to influence strategic decisions.
You’re not making the decisions, but you will be able to exert your influence.

If you want to be a leader in your field, or at least in your company, you need to deepen your expertise.
How can you make a difference? By writing articles, attending conferences, monitoring, and working on complex subjects.

Be inquisitive and take the initiative!

Although deepening your expertise is beneficial, it is not the only thing you need to do to be successful.
You need to get to know the business side (in particular, the product) and become a proactive problem solver.

Convincing people is not just about having technical skills! You need to be able to understand people and businesses to be successful.
The question on your mind must be: "how do salaries compare?"

Can an IC make as much money as a manager?

Yes is the answer, but it might take more time.

Here’s @talent_io’s salary report, which highlights the differences between both career paths join.talent.io/tech-salary-re…

How to get a pay raise?

When it comes to asking for a salary increase, do you feel fear of conflict, discomfort speaking about money, or difficulty "selling yourself"?

I found a few tips recently, which made me better at it!
1. Ask the right person at the right time

It's always best to involve your manager in negotiations with upper management - they will be your best ally in getting what you want.

Don't wait!

At the end of the year, the budget for salary increases will already be allocated!
2. Do the groundwork

Write a brief overview of your impact and how you've contributed to value creation.

Use this as a resource during your 1:1 with your manager.

The discussion will be more straightforward if you have evidence of your successes.

AI code completion tools for developers.

The comparison.

Thread πŸ§΅πŸ‘‡ Image
As you may know, there are two big players in this space.

- Github Copilot ($10/month)
- @tabnine (Free + paid plan available)

Both are AI-powered.
@tabnine Copilot is based on OpenAI and is further trained from the code sent by developers who use the tool.

Tabnine is different. Tabnine runs on the developer's computer and doesn't send code behind the firewall.
