This is what I'm interested to see--how Biden's address balances the dire need to discuss threats vs democracy vs how it deals w/issues of partisanship

They're related but not identical

Having a president directly address the preservation of American democracy is a big event.
It will be important to consider who he's talking about, when he talks about "MAGA Republicans" but not Republicans as a whole.
I do think--& have said many times- that we need to step back from the assumption that everything will be fine in the end.

We don't know that.
We don't know how this will end.
I'm not simply spouting off when I say that democracy is at risk.

It is.

We HAVE to protect it.
There's an assumption that political violence is the opposite of politics.

But it doesn't have to be.

Some political regimes deploy violence as part of their mode of "governance."

That's how dictators seize & maintain power.
We also have to differentiate bet. policy & ideology. Left & right have clashing policies. They usually do. That's part of democratic governance.

But for our gov't to function, both sides have to sign on to the pact of democratic governance.

Some on the right are NOT signing on
If you're talking about American democracy, you'd be hard pressed to pick a more symbolic location than Independence Hall, home of the creation of both the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.
I'm obviously....mighty intrigued to know what we're about to hear.

Presidential performance
Public opinion
The meaning of democracy
The distinctive nature of our political crisis
And more....

All in one big bundle.

As someone who is fascinated by political culture, I'm IN.
When I met with the President last year, I discussed the dynamics of the 1850s.

And now....here we are.
And...we're on.
When talking re: American democracy, we must differentiate bet. the goals & ambitions of democracy & the (current) realities of democracy

The possibilities are--& always have been--beyond the realities

That's not a reason to abandon democracy.
It's a reason to strive for better
As I noted -- the President is differentiating between MAGA Republicans and ALL Republicans.
"MAGA Republicans do not respect the Constitution."

Well.
There it is.
Biden: "Respected conservatives" have declared DJT a "clear & present danger to American democracy."
Biden: We are not powerless. We do not have to stand by and watch attacks on American democracy.

We can stop that assault.
Biden: We are at an inflection point. Americans must choose, to move forward or to move backwards.

A nation of optimism or a nation of fear.
Biden: Together we can choose a different path.

[We really can. We see it all the time. When people come together & push back, it often has an impact. #WeAreTheMajority]
Biden: Democracy is NOT guaranteed. We have to protect & defend it.
Biden: Defend democracy *regardless* of your ideology.
Biden: Violence is not an acceptable political tool. "There is no place for political violence in America. Period. None. Ever."
Biden: We the People must say: 'This is not who we are.'
[Newbie the History Bird says: "Newbie doobie doobie doobie." That's his way of praising democracy. Really.]
Biden: "You can't love your country only when you win."

American democracy only survives if we respect our legitimate political differences..
Biden: We've had some of our brightest moments coming out of our darkest moments.

We can lift America.
Together.
Biden: Covid, gun violence, Charlottesville, insurrection -- we're rising above it. We have to look towards the future, beyond the politics of grievance.
Biden: MAGA believes for them to succeed, everyone else must fail.....
Biden: All deserve a shot at lives of prosperity and opportunity. Democracy allows for that.
Biden: We have never fully realized our aspirations, but every generation pushes the door open a bit further.

[Well..some push it open. Some close it a bit. But that's our fight!]
Biden: This generation needs to do the work of democracy. Everyone must do their part. Get engaged. Vote. Vote. Vote.

If we do our duty, in 2022 and beyond...will say, we kept the faith. We preserved democracy.
Biden: We have to remember who we are. We are the UNITED States of America.

May God bless you all, and democracy.

1/ A few words on honor and the founders -- that relate to politics today. (Trust me.)

Elite men in early America DID worry about their honor - a combination of their reputation and their "value" as men -- particularly, public men (i.e. politicians).
2/ The fact that the founders--generally--worried about their honor DOESN'T mean that they were all honorable.

It means they were focused on their reputations & the public impact of their actions.

In a way, worrying about your honor is selfish; it's about you protecting you.
3/ The importance of a practical focus on honor had an impact on early American politics that's counterintuitive.

Public minded men (politicos) worried about their honor/reputation/identity in others' eyes.

Which means...they assumed they were accountable for their actions.

Starting now—a panel with secondary school teachers talking about teaching history during the “History Wars.”

We need to have their backs!

#SHEAR2022
Great line up of secondary school history teachers. Interested to hear their insights on teaching in the here and now.

H.S. Teaching panel: Not students or parents that cause the biggest problems in history teaching in high schools. It’s outside agitators.

1/ We have been in this situation for several years: we assume—w/o even realizing it—that the US will be ok in the end because it always has been.

That is wrong—& dangerous.
2/ As I’ve said countless times, the idea of American exceptionalism—the idea that the US can’t & won’t fall because it’s special—is blinding us to what’s happening all around us.
3/ The foundations of democracy—free & fair elections, the *belief* in free & fair elections, the accountability of public servants to the American people & the rule of law—are being destroyed right in front of us.

I disagree.

In one night alone, we had DJT insiders acknowledging in no uncertain terms that The Big Lie was a lie.

Did we know that? Yes.

Did we have this kind of proof? No.

The members of Congress who sought pardons for what they did?

We did NOT know that.
Already seeing “it’s pointless & should have been better” — it has nothing new—claims from some on the left.

I’m not sure what hearing they were watching. There were some bombshells last night, with more to come.

I AM sure that that’s a lazy take.
And given that this is—in part—aimed at exposing what really happened—with compelling insider proof—to the public and for the historical record, it MATTERS.

1/ This Friday on "History Matters," I'll be talking about why the coming congressional hearings are vitally important.

Yes, there is performance involved.
Yes, there is a partisan dimension.
But without them, we condone and normalize what happened on January 6.
2/ The hearings will accomplish sev'l imp't things regardless of any ultimate decisions.

1.They show Congress in action defending the political process & itself as an institution.

2. They display evidence so the public can ask questions, weigh possibilities, & draw conclusions.
3/
3. The hearings will present & preserve evidence for the public record & future consideration, shaping the legacies of 1/6.

4. Perhaps most imp't of all, the hearings represent a line in the sand, a public declaration that a line was crossed & violations were committed.

One of the problems inherent in not holding people accountable for political crimes is that it erodes public faith in our institutions of government.

Rapidly.

A fair trial.
Valid evidence.
And if guilty, accountability.
It’s one thing to believe that there’s corruption in government.

It’s quite another to dismiss the entire kit-&-kaboodle as ENTIRELY corrupt.

The latter jeopardizes the entirety of the rule of law.

The former offers tools for fighting corruption. Tools for improvement.
The Framers understood that key—above all else—was the process of government.

Process.

An anchor during times of strife.

That’s the ultimate purpose of the Constitution.

It’s a pact of process.
