I have seen so many variations of “How dare president Biden politicize the authoritarian assault on democracy! So partisan!” - and not a single one of these takes deserves to be taken seriously. A predictable fog of bad-faith, pseudo-“neutral” nonsense.
Conservatives do it because it’s an opportunistic attack line that builds on the tradition of deriding “politics” as a silly quarrel among factionalists who have no regard for the common good - an idea that only ever helps those who want to obstruct public policy solutions.
Centrist pundits and self-proclaimed moderates do it because it allows them to present themselves as nonpartisan arbiters of the truth - “Look how above the fray I am, so different from all those alarmists who get swept away by partisan emotions!”
And why do mainstream journalists engage in this kind of ridiculous pontificating? They’re doubling down on the established tropes of “neutrality” journalism – based on a paradigm that defines “neutrality” as keeping equidistance from either side, mistaking it for objectivity.
If political journalists actually engaged with the substance of what Biden said, they would have to admit that every allegation was factual, that everything he said about Trumpism and the Republican Party was rather indisputable empirically.
Why won’t they do that? Because for many political journalists, the overriding concern is not to be seen as “partisan.” Siding with the Democratic president in what is obviously a highly contentious issue is therefore not an option. Even if the president simply states the facts.
Journalists can’t simply ignore an event like Biden’s speech either, of course. So, instead of engaging with the substance, they will emphasize optics, or resort to horse race coverage (“How will this play with the voters?”) – or they simply decry “politicization.”
Empirically speaking, there is no equivalent on the Left to the Right’s increasingly open embrace of authoritarianism, nothing the Democratic Party is doing equals the GOP’s anti-democratic radicalization and commitment to impose the will of a reactionary minority on the country.
But if journalists were to cover, assess, and interpret this situation as objectively, accurately, and adequately as possible (which they should!), they would be criticized as “partisan” – there it is, that typical liberal media bias! – and risk losing credibility and access.
The “solution” is to create “balance” by playing up bad-faith criticism of Biden’s speech. Anti-democratic radicalization on the Right – outrageous “politicization” of the presidential bully pulpit for “partisan” reasons on the Left. Neutral media right in the middle. “Balance.”
Following a “neutrality” dogma might sound fine in a vacuum - but we’re not in a vacuum. The fundamental reality of American politics is that democracy itself has become a partisan issue, in the sense that there is currently only one major (small-d) democratic party in the U.S.
In this situation, if anyone sets out to describe accurately and precisely what is happening, it will indeed make the Republican Party look bad, as the GOP is fully committed to preventing multiracial, pluralistic democracy, and increasingly willing to embrace authoritarianism.
The norm of valuing “neutrality” over factual accuracy produces coverage that privileges the radicalizing Right. The principle becomes: “We’re not going to say anything that has the appearance of taking sides, even if it’s just factually accurate and precise.” That’s a disaster.
Addendum: I think @perrybaconjr is absolutely right. There are undoubtedly some mainstream journalists who are way worse than others - and some are always spot on! - so I’m not saying individuals are never to blame. But overall, the institutional level/incentives/culture is key.
Yup, that’s exactly the type of “neutrality” that goes directly against factual accuracy and is complicit in providing cover for the escalating assault on democracy by constantly obscuring the depth and extent of the GOP’s anti-democratic radicalization.

I fear that too many people have become so inundated with Trump’s bizarre stunts, so accustomed to his outrageous rhetoric and heinous acts, that they might be numb to how extreme, how dangerous this stuff is. “Ah, Trump being Trump” - no! This is an acute threat.
Accepting the legitimacy of the political opponent and denouncing the use of political violence - Trump has fully abandoned and is actively assaulting these foundations of democratic political culture. And Republicans are gleefully joining him in crossing those essential lines.
Let’s not ever be lulled into a false sense of security by Trump’s undeniable clownishness, the ridiculousness of it all. Some of history’s most successful authoritarians were considered goons and buffoons by their contemporaries - until they became goons and buffoons in power.

The idea that rightwing election conspiracists are actually looking at procedural issues in any substantive way and could potentially be reassured by transparency is very misleading. The problem is the outcome: If a Democrat wins, the process must not be accepted as legitimate.
It is a core tenet of the Right’s worldview to consider the Democratic Party as not simply a political opponent, but an enemy pursuing an “Un-American” project of turning what is supposed to be a white Christian patriarchal nation into a land of godless multiracial pluralism.
Even if they don’t subscribe to the more outlandish conspiracies propagated by the Trumpists, many Republicans agree that the Democratic Party is a fundamentally illegitimate political faction that must not be allowed to govern.

This sort of reactionary whining would be extremely funny - if these same forces weren’t also engaged in an all-out assault on the civil rights order and immensely successful at imposing their bizarre vision on the entire country. Prager is a joke; his ilk might also be winning.
The complete absence of pretense and subtlety is in some ways a problem, by the way. We can say “If they tell you who they are, believe them” all we want - the fact remains that many people will struggle doing just that, precisely because it’s all so clownishly reactionary/evil.
Many people will reflexively discard this stuff as “just fringe” and therefore irrelevant and not dangerous. But no, this is what’s animating the reactionary counter-mobilization against multiracial, pluralistic democracy - this is the Right’s vision for America.

Maybe the term “normalization” has been somewhat overused in the Trump era - but it’s the best term to capture what happened here: The established norms of political (access) journalism conspiring to normalize Trump and present his presidency as “normal” as much as possible.
This type of normalization has had disastrous effects, creating a permission structure for people to support Trump. It was obvious in how many of the witnesses of the January 6 hearings insisted on opening by emphasizing “all the good” Trump’s supposedly done for the country.
The self-exculpatory tale goes something like this: *Before* January 6, Trump was a normal president, achieving great things - it was only *after* the attack on the Capitol that he became a menace to the Republic. That’s obviously not true - but it is how he was often covered.

This “argument” - basically: it can’t be fascism if it’s supported by more than just a few irrelevant fringe figures - is not only historically illiterate, but also indicative of how pervasive the dogma of white innocence is, how severely it distorts the discourse. Image
The dogma of white innocence holds that whatever the political choices and actions of white Americans, they can’t be blamed, can’t be held responsible, that we must presume benign motives and reach for non-incriminating explanations.
There is a powerful incentive to sanitize the political choices of white conservative Christians: They are just “regular folks,” and as such, they can do no wrong. Usually, this is achieved by exculpatory tales about why they *didn’t mean to* or *had to* support extremism.

The key to understanding U.S. politics and history is to locate precisely where the disagreement is: It’s not the “government exists to help” part, but the “citizens” part. Conservatives favor a very narrow conception of who the citizens deserving help are - “Us,” but not “Them.”
Almost everyone actually agrees government should help Americans - conservatives just want to limit who qualifies, who deserves to be a “real American” with all the benefits that come from this status, who gets to be a member of the body politic. That’s the underlying struggle.
Many of the U.S. political discourse’s distortions result from the fact that conservatives insist it’s all just about the supposedly venerable tradition of “small government” individualism - and too many pundits / observers pretending to actually believe that.
