With all the arguments over whether MAGA Republicans are fascists, I reread William Shirer’s “The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich” to see how much the rise of Hitler and the rise of MAGA smell similar.
Conclusion: They do. This thread lists 10 ways. Please take a look. Image
1. A big lie about treachery is used to foment resentment.
Nazis: We didn’t really lose World War I. It was a “stab in the back” by Jews and other "November criminals."
MAGA: We didn’t really lose the 2020 election. It was a “steal” by politicians and Blacks in big cities. Image
2. There’s an obsession with purity of the culture.
Nazis: “Racial mixture” was a threat to Aryan culture, Hitler wrote.
MAGA: “Great replacement theory” says immigrants threaten white culture. Image
3. Chaos is something to be exploited, not addressed.
Nazis: Economic distress is a great political opportunity.
MAGA: Economic distress is a great political opportunity. Image
4. The super-rich bankroll the right-wing seizure of power.
Nazis: Thanks to I.G. Farben, Deutsche Bank, Thyssen, Krupp, etc.
MAGA: Thanks to the Mercers, Uihleins, DeVos, Thiel, etc. Image
5. Some people think the fascist threat is overblown.
Nazis: While Hitler posed a major threat, some said he "ceased to be a political danger.” (2 weeks later, he was chancellor.)
MAGA: While Trump poses a major threat, many people think it’s “just politics,” no worries. Image
6. There’s a cult of personality.
Nazis: The German army made a pledge of loyalty to Hitler personally.
MAGA: Trump’s supporters bill him as “the most moral president” in U.S. history. Image
7. Christianity is used to legitimize the movement.
Nazis: “The party stands for positive Christianity.”
MAGA: Trump is described as the “Chosen One” protecting American Christianity. Image
8. Books are the enemy.
Nazis: Any book that “acts subversively on our future” must be burned.
MAGA: “I think we should throw those books in a fire,” says a Virginia school board member. Image
9. An independent news media is the enemy.
Nazis: Any newspaper that “offends the honor and dignity of Germany” must be banned.
MAGA: The press is the “enemy of the people.” Image
10. Educators are pressured to be politically compliant.
Nazis: Teachers took an oath to “be loyal and obedient to Adolf Hitler.”
MAGA: Florida’s DeSantis accuses teachers of “indoctrination” and pressures them to avoid references to America’s racist history and LGBTQ people. Image
I'm not saying that MAGA will end up as horrifically as Nazism. I am saying that America 2022 feels too much like Germany 1932, and I don't want to take the risk of watching MAGA cultism play out. We have to stop it now.
Why did Twitter put a “sensitive” warning on this thread? Who knows? My only theory is that it has a “hateful symbol”—a swastika on the cover of Shirer’s book about Nazism. Image

Think about any pre-Trump presidential election in your lifetime. If a major candidate had elevated a racist lie that terrorized a minority group and inspired bomb threats against schools, wouldn’t it have dominated the news? 1/4 🧵
And if the major candidate kept repeating this racist lie day after day despite solid fact-checking and pleas from local officials, wouldn’t the media uproar get much louder instead of the media losing interest and tossing the story in the “Trump being Trump” bin? 2/4 🧵
Because Trump does so many outrageous things, no single outrageous thing breaks through with appropriate force. This is the fault of the American news media. Trump has trained the media to under-react – and therefore fail to do their duty. 3/4 🧵

I’ve compiled the 20 most humiliating right-wing excuses for Trump. Republican politicians and pundits embarrass themselves with ridiculous defenses of the convicted felon to earn more points with him.
This week’s Stop the Presses newsletter. 🧵1/5 stopthepresses.news/p/the-20-most-…
One of the worst Trump excusers is JD Vance. After Trump shared a meme associating Kamala Harris with blowjobs, Vance praised him for being “willing to tell some jokes. I do think that’s how you lift people up.”
Sure, JD, that’s lifting people up. 🧵2/5
Paul Ryan stars in my list of Republicans who debase themselves with absurd excuses for Trump. Ryan said Trump tried to kill an FBI probe because he's “new at this.” When Trump hinted that “2nd Amendment people” would get Hillary Clinton, Ryan called it “a joke gone bad.” 🧵3/5

Major media keep pretending Trump isn’t a deranged fascist. This 🧵notes that in the last week, Trump:
* Violated the law to do a photo op at Arlington National Cemetery.
* Claimed 70% of Americans live in poverty.
* Said “Minneapolis is burned down, they never built it back.”
(🧵Trump deranged)
* Said people are eating less bacon because of windmills.
* Shared a social media post about his opponent and blowjobs.
* Said illegal immigrants take 107% of new jobs. (Yes, 107%.)
* Vowed to fire generals who disagree with him politically. (Like Stalin did.)
(🧵Trump deranged)
* Said “in 6 states you’re allowed to kill the baby after the baby is born.” (Uh, no.)
* Welcomed an endorsement from a guy who dumped a dead bear cub in Central Park. He also vowed to take public health advice from that guy, an anti-vaxxer.

Topics that have been ignored or grossly underplayed by the political media:
Trump’s mental unfitness.
The question of whether Egypt secretly gave Trump $10 million.
Trump lying about who pays for tariffs.
(🧵 topics ignored, cont.)
Trump lying about “post-birth abortion,” something that doesn’t exist.
Trump’s failure to come up with a health care plan after promising one for 9 years.
What the extremely low jobless rate under Biden means for everyday people.
(🧵 topics ignored, cont.)
The dramatic drop in violent crime and Trump’s lies about that.
The boom in US oil production under Biden and Trump’s lies about that.
The fact that Melania Trump wants virtually nothing to do with her husband’s campaign.

If Trump has urged Israel to avoid a ceasefire that might help Kamala Harris’ campaign, it would be at least the 3rd time since the 1960s that Republicans interfered in U.S. foreign policy to help themselves politically while hurting the country. 🧵1/6
In 1968, Richard Nixon’s campaign used Chinese-born go-between Anna Chennault to persuade the South Vietnamese government to stonewall peace talks with North Vietnam. That probably meant more dead Americans and Vietnamese, but it helped Nixon. 2/6

In 1980, backers of GOP nominee Ronald Reagan secretly urged Iran to wait until after the election before releasing American hostages. Republicans knew a pre-election release would help Jimmy Carter, so they conspired to keep Americans captive longer. 3/6

Is Trump getting weirder? Maybe. But he’s always been too weird to be president. This 🧵gives examples you may have missed or forgotten. Trump’s weirdness is indisputable.

1. Trump said the left is plotting to rename the state of Pennsylvania.
(Trump weird, cont.)
2. Trump repeatedly says you need an ID to buy groceries.

3. Asked in 2005 if he would stay with Melania Trump if she were disfigured in a car crash, Trump said: “How do the breasts look?”
