The head up is about scanning the pitch so you can make the best decisions as possible. However, only looking up is not enough. Here it the three phases of playing with your head up
1. When you do not have the ball: Identify the spaces so you can position yourself in a good place to receive the ball
2. When the ball is going towards you, head up to know if you are free, or pressed, AND know where the pressure is coming from. Where can you take your first touch? Should you use 1,2 or 3 touches?
3. When you have the ball, head up to identify which team mate you can pass to. This means find the best option
By playing with your head up, you will make better decisions. If you make better decisions, you are a better player. This is one of the most difficult concept to master, and the easiest to forget. Practice every day, all the time.
Short thread/explanation of the concept "inviting the pressure"
Through this concept, the player with the ball is able to attract opposition players towards his/her position in order to give a pass to a teammate who will consequently have a larger space to play.
Invite the pressure and release the pass is a platform for the player with the ball to provide his teammates with more time and space to play and, eventually, move the ball forward towards opposition goal post
One of the most important collective concepts is to find the free player. This is not a player with just time/space, but a player with no direct opponent. Sometimes it is difficult to say which is free because some opponents defend between two players
If we find this player, his advantage of being free will probably sooner or later be transfered to another player because he will be pressed. Like we see when Rodri is pressed and KdB becomes free.
Man City against a deep block. Many interesting concepts in this clip, but want to highlight the third man-concept.👇🏻
1/2: Good collective positioning allows the ball to travel faster to move the ball to players in a good position (between lines). The ball travel faster than the opponent run.
The collective positioning (also called spacing) create links and connection between players so we can utilize the THIRD MAN-concept to escape pressure and beat opponent lines
Intervention (ballholder) when ball holder have space
- Drive forward in space and find a team mate between lines
Mutual help (closest players to the ball) when ball holder is free:
- Position between lines/positions in space (Some players can give support to attract through short passes)
Important concept of understanding your role in relation to the ball
Intervention space (ball holder): If the ball holder is pressed, he/she should try to break the lines, switch the field, OR (in this case) wait for support
Mutual help space (players closest to the ball): If the ball holder is pressed and need support (and you are in front of the ball), come towards the ball to give support and create a 2v1. If followed, do not turn with pressure.
If you are behind the ball, move away from the ball
A very short thread of positional play: Positioning to create advantages & arrive last 3rd w/ best conditions:
BUILDING ZONES
- Almost every opponent want to have num advantage close to own goal (for balanse/safety reasons). This means that we have some players who are free
FIND THE FREE PLAYER:
- This is related to which opponent who press as he leave his direct opponent. There, we should pass the ball to where the press comes from (usually)
3. INDIVIDUAL CONCEPTS
The players have good individual concepts. As an example; They play with the HEAD UP. This means they can find a good position, they understand if they are pressed or not and take first toych according to this, and they can find a player in a good position
