The Nightjet reveal event begins at 10, and I’m here. Must be Europe’s first 230km/h sleeper train? #excited? Nope, make that #hoppingupanddownexcited.
Here today are (1) a sleeping-car with 1 & 2 berth compartments, all with shower & toilet, (2) couchette car with three 4-berth compartments & 24 minisuites and (3) a seats car. I sneaked a peek at the compartment side of the couchette car with its distinctive window arrangement.
The event has started, with Leonore Gewessler, Austrian Minister of Climate Action & Energy and Andreas Matthä, head of ÖBB…
The on-board reveal of ÖBB’s new Nightjet begins! First up, the 4-berth couchettes. Note the wireless phone charging points. (Compartment door removed for today’s event to make photography easier)
4-berth couchettes
And now for the greatest innovation on these new sleeper trains: The minisuites, individual privacy at couchette prices.
Each minisuite locks with a card key which also locks shoe locker & cabin-bag-size locker.
Before anyone mentions claustrophobia, they’re fine - I tested it personally, of course. I can even sit up in it. There’s a window & wider bit at the head end. Plus opening to next minisuite if you were travelling with someone else. Length enough for me at 6’2” if I remove shoes.
I can also confirm there are tip-up seats in the corridor outside the minisuites.
And now, the 1 & 2 bed sleepers. 9 standard compartments like this, 1 more spacious deluxe (note doors removed for today’s ease of viewing)
These sleepers are a complete departure from 100 years of the classic European sleeper layout, they make great use of the space.
Again I tested bed length- just enough for me at 6’2” with shoes off. The table can be lowered & a cushion put on it to create a sofa for 2 ppl instead of single seat + table.
The sleeping-car also has one ‘deluxe’ compartment with transverse beds, extra space, and a separate shower cubicle as well as WC.
And finally…. All compartments do THIS at the touch of a button on the compartment control panel. This I was NOT expecting…
Each 7-car unit has 2 sleepers, 3 couchette cars, 1 multi-function car (seats & accessible 4-berth couchette compartment with lo-floor entry), 1 seats car. Each couchette car has 28 minisuites & three 4-berth compartments. First deployment Vienna/Munich to Venice/Florence/Rome.

Berlin Gesundbrunnen. Tonight’s sleeper from Berlin to Vienna & Budapest is diverted to start from here rather than Berlin Hbf.
Feels like hanging around Watford Junction hoping one of the endless suburban trains turns out to be a Caledonian Sleeper to Scotland….
The sleeper to Vienna, Graz, Budapest rolls into Berlin Gesundbrunnen…

Good morning! Today kicks off with the 07:17 Danish Intercity train from Copenhagen to Hamburg, connecting for Berlin & the Nightjet sleeper to Vienna.
Just sneaked into 1st class for a cup of complimentary instant coffee. I say ‘sneaked’, I actually have a 1st class Interrail, just couldn’t get a 1st class seat reservation, all booked up. May need to unsneak when more ppl get on…

I’ve an appointment in Vienna…. So the journey from Helsinki begins, with the 17:36 Intercity to Turku Port. I’m in Ekstra class, which is rocking those headrests… ImageImageImageImage
I am fighting the recline mechanism on this seat. It is winning.
At least the 15-minute replacement bus service from Kupittaa to Turku Port was well signed & reasonably efficient. I’m now checked in for the @vikingline_fi ferry to Stockholm. ImageImageImageImage

I promised you something special in Stockholm. Well, when I was 9 years old, my classroom had a library corner. One book fascinated me above all others. I read it again and again…
..it was about the raising of the warship Vasa, which heeled over & sank on its maiden voyage in 1628 and was raised from the sea bed in Stockholm harbour in 1961, a great feat of engineering…
I first saw her in her original museum building in 1982, the best-preserved ship of that era in the world. I’m seeing her again now. It’s given me goose bumps…

STOCKHOLM EXPRESS… So here I am in the business lounge at @StPancrasInt, for 15:04 Eurostar to Brussels, on to Cologne & Hamburg tomorrow, then to Stockholm on the inaugural run of the new @SJ_AB EuroNight sleeper train. What’s in Stockholm? Something really special…
I have spotted that I may need a retread. Where’s that F1 pitstop team when you need them..?
All aboard for Stockholm! Seat 61? Brussels services all fully-booked today, 71 the best I could do, darn it…

This is interesting. 25 Oct, 10:45 Lumo service, £19.90 fare available on the Lumo website. So far, so good...
It's also correctly shown on Thetrainline.com...
...whilst LNER.co.uk says no advance fares are available, as does TfWRail.wales & Chilternrailways.co.uk. Other dates I've checked also show no Lumo advance fares, just the top £69 one...
