2100 S in Sugar House is a street reconstruction. It is thus a Complete Streets Ordinance mandate that @slcmoves @stretchtraffic add bike lanes to the street. Their survey was disingenous in that it gave 'Do Nothing' as an option. This muddles the issue. #saltlakecity 1/
@slcmoves @stretchtraffic Some residents that answered 'do nothing' (same as Leave as is) will be confused if bike lanes are added as required by SLC Code. Unfortunately, @slcmayor and @slcmoves have shown that they don't understand and won't follow their own law. See 100 S for example.
@slcmoves @stretchtraffic @slcmayor SLC continues to have this offensive language on their website: "A common misconception of the City’s Complete Streets Ordinance (and complete streets in general) is that it requires bike lanes to be included in every street the City builds or reconstructs."
@slcmoves @stretchtraffic @slcmayor This is not a misconception, it is the rule of law. The code states: "Bicycle and pedestrian ways shall be established in the city's new construction and reconstruction projects in the public right of way...". Shall is a legal term that means "must".
@slcmoves @stretchtraffic @slcmayor There are limited cases where bikeways need not be constructed that include cost outweighing need and limited population. These must be backed up by data. (note that on 100 S, the city did not back this up by data).
Further, the purpose of the ordinance states: "All city owned transportation facilities in the public right of way on which bicyclists and pedestrians are permitted by law, including, but not limited to, streets, bridges, and all other connecting pathways, shall be designed,...
...constructed, operated, and maintained so that users, including people with disabilities, can travel safely and independently." Again, the use of the word shall. The purpose of the ordinance spells out everything that is needed for the upcoming Transportation Master Plan...
All city streets and roads SHALL be safe for all users - a mandate. This need not just apply to new construction, but rather is a mandate for radical change with how we treat all streets and roads. However, SLC has ignored this mandate repeatedly since the ordinance was passed.
2100 S between 1700 E and 2300 was a repaving (not reconstruction) project, where then Mayor Biskupski with support from Councilperson Luke over ruled @slcmoves and did not implement the road diet and bike lanes that it was supposed to get.
@slcmoves As a direct result, there were several crashes where drivers maimed a teen and broke both of their legs, and another where there was a death. Ignoring the law has gruesome consequences for the general public. There are no plans to fix 2100 S from 1700 E to 2300 E.
So, what will happen on 2100 S from 1300 E west to to 700 E? Will Mayor Mendenhall @slcmayor follow the law? Will Sugar House become a more vibrant second downtown? Or remain a car centric dangerous road for SLC Citizens? The results of the survey suggest people want bike lanes..
@slcmayor And that they feel unsafe on 2100 S. SLC has a chance to redo the road, but as bike advocates, we all need to ensure that SLC follows the law. drive.google.com/file/d/10R7f0f…

Just one more gondola will fix it!
UDOT hasn’t learned the principle of induced demand. That is, the more capacity a transportation system has, the more people will use it. 🧵 1/
The gondola at best has the ability to absorb about 15% of trips, but that’s not going to reduce canyon crowds. It will have opposite effect and will deliver 15% more people to the resorts.
Is that what is needed? Lift lines will be 15% longer, the powder will be gone by 9:35 instead of 10. And the red snake will still be there to bite you. And resort owners will be 15% richer. And gondola builders will be $250 million richer.
