Do you have a @Citibank account?

If so, I strongly recommend that you find an alternative. Citibank has procedures that will lock you out of all your accounts without consultation — and will bar you from regaining access for 45 days, even if you show up in person with ID. (1/9)
This happened to my son. He went to another US city and tried to use his debit card. Card was declined, account was blocked.

This happens. But what happened next was Kafkaesque: @Citibank refused to accept any method of proving his identity, including showing up in person. (2/9)
His first notice wasn't a text or email alerting him to fraud. It was an email announcing that all his accounts were blocked, immediately, and would automatically close, so he had no access to any funds.

Since he was traveling and was relying on @Citibank, he was screwed. (3/9)
He phoned every number they provided on the email and on his card. He gave his SSN and other identifying info. They refused to restore his access.

They asked for another number; he gave it to them. They sent him a security code; he read it back to them. They still refused. (4/9)
Friends floated him money so he could get by till he got home.

When he got home, he went to the branch where he had opened the account. They told him they were understaffed and couldn't restore his access. He'd have to wait a week for a letter mailed to his home address. (5/9)
He got an appointment at another branch. Brought his driver's license. The branch phoned @Citibank HQ. They *still* said they couldn't verify the account. They told him it would be reviewed within 48 hours.

Then, without consulting him further, they closed the account. (6/9)
Today he called and was told the account was closing. He asked whether he could do anything to stop the closure. They said no.

So my wife went to the branch with him and his ID. They still said they couldn't restore his access or stop the closure.

But wait, it gets worse. (7/9)
My wife said: Since you're closing the account, can we open a new account for him? And can we transfer his money to that account?

Answer: No. They won't release his money, or let him open a new account at all, for 45 days. Even when he's sitting there, in person, with ID. (8/9)
Summary:

1. Don't depend on @Citibank while traveling. If they block you, they may not let you back in, no matter who you call.

2. Always have a non-Citi account from which you can get 45 days worth of money if you need it. Showing up with ID won't restore access to your funds.
P.S. I know how annoying it is when people on Twitter complain about bad service by a company. I try to avoid it.

I made an exception this time because blocking bank customers from their money isn't just bad service. For people who have no access to other funds, it's disastrous.
Update: @AskCiti (customer service) offered to "look into this further for you."

We explained the story again. They refused to release the money or expedite the closure. They're keeping his money inaccessible for 30-60 days.

We're proceeding to @CFPB. Stay away from @Citibank.

Great conversation between @DrTedJ and @SarahLongwell25 on diversity, race, and gender.

Ted explains how needlessly explicit pledges to appoint based on race (e.g. Biden on KBJ) reinforce the "asterisk" that unfairly haunts promoted women and minorities. bit.ly/3vn9wSy
Ted's alternative model: the NFL rule that teams must interview, not necessarily hire, a minority candidate for head coach.

Biden could do this for court and cabinet jobs, "so whoever he ends up choosing feels less like an affirmative-action hire or a racial quota fulfillment."
"Biden just nominated a woman to lead the Coast Guard. First time ever, a women will lead an armed service. No fanfare. He didn’t say ... 'I’m going to make sure a woman leads our armed forces.' He just did it."

Result: "No one’s talking about whether this woman is qualified."

Fox News segment against booster requirements imposed by private colleges. Quote: "We now know that the vaccines do not prevent infection and transmission, so any community-spread benefit is negligible."

That is an absolute lie. This network is a menace. bit.ly/33qIn7s
Antivaxers are responding to this tweet by quoting @CDCDirector in an August interview, saying vaccines don't "prevent transmission."

These people are misleading you. By "prevent," she meant 100% prevent. Vaccines strongly reduce your risk of infection. Here's what she said ...
"the breadth and depth of your immune response is far expanded when you get the vaccine"

"your rates of getting COVID again are higher if you have not been vaccinated"

"our job now is ... decreasing chains of transmission through vaccination and masking" cnn.it/33Ru0ZG

"The committee has firsthand testimony that President Trump was sitting in the dining room next to the Oval Office, watching on television as the Capitol was assaulted," says @Liz_Cheney on FTN. "We know that that is clearly a supreme dereliction of duty." cbsn.ws/3qFgVdt
Trump "could have simply walked a few feet to the White House briefing room," gone "on live television, and asked his supporters to stop what was happening, asked them to go home," Cheney notes.

Instead, he was "calling at least one senator, urging delay of the electoral vote."
"Our party has to choose," says Cheney. "We can either be loyal to Donald Trump, or we can be loyal to the Constitution. But we cannot be both."

"Far too many Republicans," she warns, "are trying to enable the former president" and "to obstruct the activities of this committee."

Based on the pattern in South Africa & UK, “This is about a 2-month epidemic wave from start to finish,” says @ScottGottliebMD on FTN. NYC and other early-hit areas will peak within 2 weeks; other areas within 4 weeks. “Certainly, by the end of February, we will be through this.”
Gottlieb warns less affected states that they face a "hard month ahead." We won't reach "a national peak until we get into February," he says, because "there's parts of the country that really haven't been hard-hit by Omicron yet. And the virus will spread around the country."
Gottlieb says Omicron "appears to be more of an upper-airway disease than a lower-airway disease. That’s good for most Americans," but it's a challenge for "very young children," in whom we're seeing "more croup-like infections and bronchiolitis" and "rising hospitalizations."

On ABC, Fauci summarizes the danger of Omicron:

"The mutations would strongly suggest that it would be more transmissible and that it might evade some of the protection of monoclonal antibodies and convalescent plasma, and perhaps even antibodies that are induced by vaccine."
Stephanopoulos asks: "What do we know about how resistant [Omicron] is to the current vaccines?"

"We will know that likely within a period of about two weeks," says Fauci. "That whole process is already underway right now."
"I don't think there's any possibility that [Omicron] could completely evade any protection by a vaccine," says Fauci.

He explains that current boosters raise neutralizing antibodies "high enough that it generally crosses over and covers several of the variants." So get boosted.
