(2/6) The CCP has ramped up its media influence efforts worldwide through tactics ranging from content placements and media partnerships to covert and coercive tactics like intimidation and disinformation campaigns.
(3/6) Journalists, scholars, civil society groups, & governments are pushing back with initiatives to increase transparency & protect media freedom. The latter is key to democratic resilience in the face of CCP pressure.
(4/6) Nonetheless, half of the countries we studied were particularly vulnerable to the CCP’s influence efforts, with Nigeria being deemed the most susceptible. Taiwan and the US faced the most intense campaigns, but also mounted the strongest responses.
(5/6) In 24 of the 30 countries we studied, CCP officials or local actors took steps to suppress critical coverage related to China. These are the tactics they used – and where they used them.
